Suspect in NC soldier's death was baby's father

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Fort Bragg sergeant charged in the death of a pregnant soldier had his first court appearance today, and told a judge he would seek a court-appointed attorney. Sgt. Edgar Patino told the judge that he had filed the necessary court documents to retain counsel. He also told the judge that he understood that he was charged with first-degree murder and that he faced either the death penalty or life without parole if convicted. Patino was arrested Tuesday night at his home near Fayetteville in the death of Spc. Megan L. Touma. The 23-year-old Touma was seven months pregnant when she was found dead in a Fayetteville motel bathtub last month. At a news conference today, police said Patino admitted fathering Touma's baby.
