The two candidates vying for the states 18th district seat were campaigning hard Monday. That is the seat vacated by Thomas Wright earlier this year when Wright was convicted of obstruction of justice. Republican candidate George Swart and his Democratic rival and appointed incumbent Sandra Spaulding Hughes commented on the state of their race on Monday. Both say they feel confident about winning tomorrow's election. On this final day of campaigning, Swart and Hughes's volunteers went door to door and made phone calls to sway undecided voters. “We've been going door to door and passing out flyers,” Swart said. Hughes is also ready. “It's been moving fast. We've gotten our volunteers together and they have received their directions and we are ready to move on tomorrow.” Swart plans to be at the Soho Steakhouse with fellow Republicans awaiting Tuesday's results. Hughes will be watching the returns come in at the New Hanover County Board of Elections office.
