Taste of Southport

READ MORE: Taste of Southport
We've seen and heard all about Southport this month in Cape Fear Pride, but now you can taste it too. The Taste of Southport offers folks the opportunity to sample food from a handful of the town's chefs. The event is in March, but WWAY has a sneak preview. Chef Jesse Powell said, “I learned from home cooking and it had always been a passion of mine to either be a travel agent or a chef and my wife convinced me after 17 years in the nuclear work to becoming a chef and I've fulfilled a dream...loving every minute of it.” For the majority of work the day, Powell calls the kitchen at Southport's Bella Cucina restaurant home. He's already getting prepared for the Second Annual Taste of Southport. For $25, folks will feast on eight creations, each made by a different Southport chef. This year, they'll also be demonstrations; participants will learn how to prepare the dishes, and get the recipes, something chefs don't often share. Downtown Southport executive director Peggy McDonald said, “It can be a lot of fun and it also kind of provides a social interaction, a lot of the people in this community, the events that we have are very much a social event.” And if it's waterfront beauty and quaint small town feel didn't bring visitors. Taste of Southport is another way the city is hoping to draw tourism. McDonald explained, “It’s a destination city. You can't go from point A to point B through Southport you have to plan to come here and so that's what we're trying to do.” Barbara Stockbridge-Davidson, a Taste of Southport committee member said, “For us, it’s an opportunity to bring people in to share our joy, because we just love Southport.” Last year 200 people bought tickets to the event, and this year they're hoping to draw more. But just what's being served, is a well-kept secret. Proceeds from the event go toward the beautification of Southport. The event is on March 1st. You can buy tickets, starting in January, by calling the Southport Visitor's Center at 457-7927.
