Tax admin takes blame for missing millions

READ MORE: Tax admin takes blame for missing millions
WILMINGTON -- The man responsible for a $10 million budget shortfall in New Hanover County is stepping up and accepting the blame. The damage has already been done and now the county's tax administrator is working with officials to try and remedy the situation. New Hanover County Tax Administrator Bob Glasgow says he realized his mistake about two and a half weeks ago. Glasgow says he began comparing property appraisal values and noticed a difference in numbers. Glasgow blames himself for the mistake and says he didn't subtract tax exempt properties, which made up about $1.8 billion in New Hanover County's property appraisal values, from the total amount. That mistake resulted in the county creating the 2007- 2008 budget for about $10 million more than they had coming in. Glasgow said, "I'm sick about it, because I'm so close to retirement and I hate to see going out in a bad state of affairs. Once again, we thought that we had the correct information." Glasgow is retiring from his position in May after 12 years on the job. Wednesday the county attorney met with Glasgow and members of the finance department to try and figure out a solution to the budget shortfall.

Doubt it

Naah, I bet he actually listens to music, not that crap.

It's an endless party around here, Scally...

Just last Saturday I had TWO glasses of red wine with dinner (instead of my normal one glass daily) and stayed up past ten! Of course, I regretted it the next morning when I slept-in past five. While I do have an insanely extensive CD collection, including just about everything ever done by Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn, Bob Wills, Hank Williams, and Eric Clapton (from the John Mayall Bluesbreakers days up to the present) and even have two shelves of CDs labeled "Black men what can sing," my tastes run more along the lines of Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, the Ruffin Brothers (and all the others who wandered in and out of the Temptations), the Four Tops, the Platters, the Drifters, Teddy Pendergast, Billy Ocean.... ....you know, that horrible stuff that had a recognizable melody and English lyrics that can be understood? In my day, "hip-hop" was something we cured with Pepto-Bismol or blackberry wine.

common

Party on Common.

So close

Is it a coincident that rap and crap are spelled so closely? I think not!

heehee

Is it also a coincidence that coincident and coincidence are spelled almost the same and that "coincident" is not a word at all? sorry, I couldn't resist. Scally, I thought you were a Realtor? Hip/hop? Please tell me it isn't so.

7 Mil. now 10

Good for Bob for stepping forward. Now if the "we" ("we thought that we had the correct information.") would step up as well. Fair tax, fair tax, fair tax. Of course it will never happen because it would take the power away from people that shouldn't have it in the first place.

Thank you Mr. Glasgow

Thank you for stepping up and admitting fault. Too many people in our government play the blame game or try to cover up mistakes. Now the county can move forward with accurate data.

Starts somewhere

Now, stand up and point at all the other *sob*s in the room that didn't have the balls to do as you have. Much appreciate your candor, I only hope that we are going to move toward a reduction of government in an effort to recover from this hiccup and not be like the city of Wilmington and move faster at the annexation of the Monkey Junction area. What is the county going to do? Cutting back might actually show the people that it can be done and the powers that be in the county government DO NOT want people to know they can cut back.

$10M Goof

OK; when does his resignation or termination take affect?

Did, you read the article?

Did, you read the article? It covers that...

RAise

It won't. The County Commisioners that we have in this county will probably give him a raise for a job well done.

COUNTY CUTS

IN THE NEWS REPORT TODAY THEY SPOKE OF CUTTING COST TO REPAY SOME OF THE MONEY THAT WAS MISS CALCULATED. IF THEY WANT TO STAT DOING SOME BUDGET CUTS THEN MAYBE THEY NEED TO START WITH CUTTING SOME OF THERE BIG SALARIES TO START OF WITH.

County Taxes

I hope the voters in the area will finally realize the importance of knowing their public tax accounts. Tax and spend policies in our area often are more "behind the scenes" policies, than public knowledge. Yes, the biggest mistake is not Mr Glasgow's, but the mistake of the voters, in not keeping tabs on their tax money!
