Tax breaks for owners of wildlife havens

North Carolina is backing private landowners who want to make their property a haven for wildlife. The House and Senate voted in favor of landowners receiving a lower property tax if they keep land undeveloped. The key is the land must provide a habitat for wildlife. The new law requires each property have it's own wildlife management plan. Bob Foy owns the Abby Nature Trail in Poplar Grove. He enjoys the $8,000 tax cut every year, as well as knowing his land is a haven for wildlife and visitors. "…so that to me is one of the best things, that people will be able to use this property same as I did in my twenties, walking through national parks," said Foy. The Topsail High School track team uses Abby Trails for practices and meets. Foy said there are some great trails with hills that you can not find anywhere else.
