videoThe Wilmington Hammerheads desperately needed a win on Sunday afternoon, but the Pittsburgh Riverhounds proved to be stingy hosts. The Riverheads edged the Hammerheads 2-1. At the British Open Phil Mickelson won in comeback fashion on Sunday at Muirfeld. Former Laney Buccaneer Tamera Young led Chicago in scoring over the weekend in a WNBA game against New York. videoConnor Barth will have to watch the 2013 NFL season from the sidelines or possibly from the comforts of home. Barth has been placed on the reserve/non-football injury list due to a tear of his right Achilles tendon. The Wilmington Sharks won on Wednesday night. The Sharks return home on Thursday for a doubleheader against Wilson. Plus more!

WWAY's Tuesday night sports - July 16; Trot Nixon takes youth baseball team to regionals

videoTrot Nixon no longer plays professional baseball, but he remains involved in baseball by coaching his youngest son's youth baseball team. Nixon's Supper Optimist squad will compete in the SE Regional starting this Thursday in Virginia. Wilmington Post 10 secured a spot in the state legion tournament with a playoff win on Tuesday over Whiteville Post 137. Plus more!

WWAY's Monday night sports - July 15; Devoted Wilmington Sharks employee dies at ballpark

videoMonday's baseball game at Buck Hardee Field was called off due to the death of Wilmington Sharks employee Kevin Cerasuolo. The death is under investigation, but it appears to be from natural causes. UNCW men's basketball coach Buzz Peterson is counting on recent transfer Addison Spruill to play a big part on the court for the Seahawks this season. Spruill recently fractured his right foot though. He'll be out at least 4-6 weeks. Plus more!

videoThe inaugural "Champions 4 Cancer" basketball event concluded on Sunday without a champion. A dispute over prize money led to several teams walking off the court prior to the end of the tournament. In baseball Wilmington Post 10 was a shutout winner over Whiteville on Sunday night. The O'Neill Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest concluded on Sunday with several area surfers holding more than own at Wrightsville Beach in the men's pro finals.

WWAY's Wednesday night sports - July 3

The Wilmington Hammerheads took an early lead against the first place Orlando City Lions on Wednesday. Wilmington lost the lead, but they didn't lose the game. The squads played to a 2-2 draw. The Wilmington Sharks lost their first game of the second half of the summer baseball season on Wednesday. Post 10 defeated Post 137. Click full story to see our game highlights for all three.
