While some folks are leaving our beaches, others are packing up and heading to the waves. The surf's up at Wrightsville beach despite the potential dangers that comes with hitting these waves. Although the storm is not here yet, it's already causing a surge in the ocean and that has surfers excited.

Fourth of July weekend didn't turn out so well for team USA at the Billabong ISA World Surfing Games. They finished in eighth.
However Kure Beach local Tony Silvagni continued to advance in the longboard contest, eventually claiming the gold medal.

Hurley and the Sweetwater Surf Shop sponsored a surf contest for about 80 local children. The "Rip My Shred Stick" tour is a travelling event. Our coast was its sixth stop.

The nationally-ranked surf team took home the first place title for the third consecutive year at the 2011 National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) East Coast Championships held in New Smyrna Beach, FL.

A Wilmington man kicks a shark and then gets attacked. Josh Clement, 25, was surfing off Figure Eight Island with some friends Saturday. About 3 p.m., he caught a wave in. As he was jumping back on his board to paddle back out, he accidentally kicked the shark. He says the shark then turned and bit his left foot.

Surfing can be intimidating and that's assuming you can see. Now imagine being blind or close to it. A dozen visually impaired children did just that by rising to the challenge of riding the waves on Monday at Wrightsville Beach.
