Sen. Phil Berger has informed the mayors of several cities and the North Carolina League of Municipalities that should the cities continue to fight this new law in court, the General Assembly – which holds the sole Constitutional Authority over municipal boundaries – will simply create permanent municipal lines to stop these cities from imposing forced annexation.

Yesterday was the deadline for Monkey Junction residents and property owners near Southport to return annexation denial petitions. It's unofficial right now, but both communities returned more than 75 percent of the petitions. Only 60 percent were needed to block annexation.

The Board of Elections wants to know what property owners in Monkey Junction think of annexation. New Hanover County sent out letters Thursday asking property owners if they want to deny Wilmington's annexation of Monkey Junction.
