An apartment fire in Wilmington yesterday left five families homeless. Neighbors say a man passing by noticed the fire from the alley and quickly tried to notify tenants of the danger.

Scary moments for a Wilmington neighborhood this afternoon after a gas leak forced some people from their homes. The gas leak near the intersection of 7th and Campbell Streets was so bad you could smell it from more than two blocks away.

WFD crews are on the scene of a natural gas line rupture at this time.
The line is a 6" line and the leak is significant.

A man was killed Saturday night in an apartment fire at 2114 Burnett Blvd. According to Battalion Chief David Hines, a spokesman from the Wilmington Fire Department, the victim was 62 year-old John Franklin Sutton.

Despite losing half of their home to a morning fire, a Wilmington family is thankful. The Fultons say a neighbor woke them up and alerted them about the fire. Everyone made out safely, but the family says it could have been worse.

It's Fire Prevention Week and to start it off, the Wilmington Fire Department and New Hanover County Fire Rescue are targeting senior citizens in their effort to provide safety information. Firefighters are delivering Meals on Wheels all week, talking to senior residents about fire safety and checking their smoke detectors.
