The numbers for unemployment in North Carolina for December came out earlier this week. Brunswick County had the biggest jump in our area from November, so we decided to put a face to the statistics.

Unemployment was up in 93 of North Carolina's 100 counties during December, including four of five counties in our area, according to numbers released this morning by North Carolina Department of Commerce - Labor and Economic Analysis Division.

Since December 2010, private sector jobs have increased by 29,400 (seasonally adjusted). Over-the-year, leisure & hospitality had the largest job gain with 11,800. Total nonfarm industry employment, as gathered through the monthly establishment survey decreased slightly by 4,400 but was up 19,600 over-the-year.

After a small drop in July, unemployment is up again in the Wilmington metro area. The region's unemployment rate climbed to 10.5 percent in August. That's up from 10.2 percent in July after a drop from 10.4 percent in June. The Employment Security Commission says 18,744 are unemployed in our area.
