The ever-changing temperatures continue to take their toll on the sea turtles off the coast of North Carolina. Twelve green sea turtles have died already this winter because of the changing cold temperatures.

Loggerhead turtles can be found all along the Carolina coast from Topsail Island to Holden beach, but unfortunately their existence is being threatened. Fish and wildlife leaders announced Friday these creatures would no longer be listed as one threatened species but nine distinct population segments.

Topsail Beach has been busy this summer, and not just with tourists. Sea turtles have been making their way to the beach to lay their eggs, but now the are facing some hardships. The hatchlings must first survive their incubation period, which is sometimes compromised by natural predators, like foxes and coyotes, who love a tasty snack.

Just as the cold has been affecting many of us this season, it's also effecting the turtle populations off the coast of North Carolina. The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation Center at Topsail Island has heaters and blankets for sea turtles that have been cold-stunned.
