Thieves stealing car parts

READ MORE: Thieves stealing car parts
Thieves have discovered certain high priced metals can be stolen right from your driveway. Several auto mechanics say they're seeing an increase in stolen catalytic converters, which are part of your car's exhaust system. It is happening to cars broken down on the side of the road, in parking lots, or just sitting in front of your home. People are sawing the converters right out from under vehicles. SUV's and trucks are most targeted, but it could happen to any car. It does not take drivers long to notice after it's happened. Without this crucial part of the exhaust system, they'll hear it. Catalytic converters are made up of expensive metals such as platinum and rhodium. Mechanics say they are being sold for as much as $500. Jeff Baird of The Muffler Place said, "I've been in this business for almost 30 years and I've never heard of it before, but the last year or so when platinum really spiked, yeah they're stealing them now." Depending on a vehicle's size, it will have one to four catalytic converters. Replacing them can cost between $200 and $2000. The cost depends on what kind they are, and how many were stolen from your car.
