WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Tis the season for giving. California-based TOMS hopes people will give shoes this holiday season. Lydia Chandler, assistant buyer for TOMS Shoes at Sweetwater Surf Shop in Wrightsville Beach, says there's more to this purchase than just cute footwear.
"It's amazing how many people step out and decide to buy these shoes because of the fact that he is giving a pair away," says Chandler.
The idea is simple. For every pair of TOMS Shoes purchased, the company will give a pair of shoes to a child in need. It's what they call the "One for One Movement". Chandler says the company's founder, Blake Mycoskie, wants his mission to catch on.
"He wants others to adopt that idea in their businesses," says Chandler. "To give something to someone who needs it who doesn't have the means of getting it for themselves, to help others who don't have the resources that we have."
It seems other businesses are buying into the idea. Just like TOMS Shoes, a local business is giving back to the community with your purchases. "Half United" has adopted the "One for One" business model. Founder Carmin Black says its all about making a difference.
"Half is a clothing company fighting global hunger and every time you purchase one of our products," says Black. "You feed a child in need both here in Wilmington and in countries abroad."
Black says her internship with TOMS Shoes motivated her to start her own business that gives back. She says giving while making purchases you would make anyway is a no brainer.
"This business model is so well received, and it's awesome because it spans almost any age range," says Black.
So, this holiday season, give the gift of giving... and maybe get something for yourself along the way.
