WILMINGTON--Christmas is quickly approaching and some parents are already hitting up the stores to buy toys for their kids. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, there are certain types of toys that could be dangerous for your child. This week, it released the top 5 toy hazards for kids. Scooters and other toys with wheels that children can ride like skateboards and bikes are at the top of the list. Tina Poole, an Injury Prevention Specialist at New Hanover Regional Medical Center, isn't surprised those items are ranked first. "Parents may not buy the protective gear for scooters and bikes and stuff like that," Poole said. Small balls, balloons and magnets are the next 3 items on the list. They're considered choking hazards. "For your younger kids, 3 years old and under you want to make sure you don't buy those type of items, even if it looks fun and the kid points it out to you at the toy store, you need to look for the age appropriate toys for your child," Poole said. Chargers and adapters sit at the bottom of the list. They are very common items for electronic toys, but if not used properly, could lead to serious burns. In 2007, the CPSC reported 18 children under the age of 15 died due to toy related injuries, while 170,000 children got hurt. Which is all the more reason Poole said parents should learn how to use a toy first, before passing it over to their child. "As long as parents teach their children how to use the different items safely, they'll be a lot safer." On December 17, Poole will host a Toy Safety event for parents at Kohl's department store in Wilmington. It starts at 4:00 p.m. She also said parents should be careful about buying toys at second-hand shops because they could be on the recall list. Log onto www.cpsc.gov to view the recall list.

Noisy toys

Were any of this category mentioned? Cute little stuffed things that talk, or any number of other toys that come with fetching electronic sound effects can cause hearing damage, especially for infants and small children.

Parental Responsibility

If parents plan to purchase these named items for their children be prepared to give proper supervision. The only reason they are seen as hazards is the lack of teaching the child right from wrong in the use of the item. We need to start teaching our children right from wrong and make sure they understand the consequences of each. It's like the guy fussing about Carolina Video's sign out front. Come'on!!!! Do you take your kids to the beach? Do you go to the mall and walk your children in front of Victoria's Secret? Or were you just needing some 15secs of fame...more like SHAME.
