Topsail Humane Society finds homes for pets, won't close without a fight

READ MORE: Topsail Humane Society finds homes for pets, won't close without a fight
There's no sign and no animals at the former Topsail Humane Society headquarters. The property, once leased by the society, was recently sold, so the animals found a new home in Hampstead. The problem is, the county says this violates zoning laws, since the makeshift shelter is in a residential neighborhood on Lewis Road. Now, the humane society has thirty days to shut down. Director Kathy Lewis said she's not closing without a fight. The site used to house the Topsail Humane Society in 2003. Lewis said since then, the property has been used a secondary site to house animals. Now, Lewis has to prove it was in use before the zoning changed to residential. "We are going to find these dogs homes. We are going to find as much documentation that we have never abandoned this facility." If the "no kill" shelter is unable to adopt out the animals, they would be turned over to the county shelter, which euthanizes unwanted animals. The good news is, when word got out about the humane society closing, animal lovers came pouring in. "We are here for their voice. We want to save them and when this closes they are going to go to a kill shelter and I just couldn't bear that,” said Debbie Kinney who came by to adopt a pet. If Lewis's appeal doesn't work, she said she'll start raising money, and looking for a new home. "We don't intend to dissolve. Topsail Humane Society will always be here." Thursday, we reported the Topsail Humane Society was being shut down on Friday. Since then, the county decided to give Kathy Lewis and the animals 30 more days. There are four more animals that need homes. If you want to adopt one, call the humane society at 270-2660.
