BRUNSWICK COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Traffic is moving again on US 17 south of Leland. The road was closed in both directions just south of Lanvale Road near Leland. A witness stuck in traffic in the southbound lane said there was a fender bender in the northbound lane, but officers shut down traffic in both directions at a bridge over railroad tracks that run next to Brunswick Forest.
When traffic started moving again, the driver told us there were two cars on the side of the southbound lanes but no other signs of problems.
When WWAY called Brunswick County Dispatch to find out what happened, a dispatcher said, "Everything is iced. I can't stay on the line," before quickly hanging up.

On the northboud side, there were 3 vehicles that went down the embankment and into the woods. They wouldn't have been visible from the southbound lanes.
icy roads
My husband came through that area via 74-76 early this morning and saw cars flipped upside down and in the ditches. RESPECT the ice!
Icy road conditions
Ok, if 911 dispatchers say everything is iced over, then why does the school system not know. Obviously, the roads are not safe to transport our children. Why no delay?
Because it's Bruns Co and
Because it's Bruns Co and that's how they roll....an Ice Age behind everyone else....no pun intended.
DOT dropped the ball on that one.
"It's only been below freezing for a week and were expecting frozen percipitation but we don't need to worry about salting the multiple bridges on the magor highways through Brunswick County...they'll be ok...."
Wonder how the guy that totalled his camper and those 12 cars I saw in the ditch on HWY 17 feel about the DOT's preparation.....
