Transportation Department sues over alleged embezzlement at license office

WILMINGTON (AP) -- North Carolina's Transportation Department has sued the Oak Island Mayor and a former employee at his license plate office as it tries to recover funds the employee is charged with embezzling.

Mayor Johnnie Vereen isn't charged criminally, but is named in the lawsuit as the contract holder for the license plate agency, which is closed. The lawsuit states the state wants repayment of $388,000.

Former office manager Annie Daphine Ross Prince was indicted in June on a charge of obtaining property by false pretenses.

Vereen's attorney says all allegations in the lawsuit are directed to actions taken by Prince. The lawyer say Vereen went to the office infrequently and Vereen has filed a countersuit.
