In this Troubleshooters Report, a Wilmington woman said she was the victim of a bait-and-switch operation. Dusty Wilkins saw an advertisement for a new, queen sized, pillow top mattress set, for just $200. She jumped on the offer, but when she went to buy it, that mattress was out of stock. You may have seen the handwritten signs at busy intersections across Wilmington. Dusty Wilkins did, and called the number to buy the mattress, for a fraction of the retail cost. She set up an appointment to meet the seller that day, and was surprised to find a full-fledged warehouse. What's more, the cheapest queen-sized mattress available was about $500. "I said I wasn't interested in that, I was interested in the $200 set that he had advertised on the sign, and that we had spoken about,” said Wilkins. Dusty said the man tried to convince her to buy one of the mattresses he did have in stock, but she felt duped, and left empty handed. "I knew that what he was doing was not a legitimate way of doing business, and the more I thought about it, the more I thought that this needs to come to light,” she said. News Channel 3 decided to look into what was going on, and called the number on the sign. Twig Rollins called us back and said everything about his business was on the up and up. He invited us to come tour his Judges Road warehouse for ourselves. "By being in a warehouse in a business park, we don't have the thousands and thousands of dollars of overhead, so the customer gets a high quality product, by a very reputable manufacturer at a low price," Rollins said. As for what happened to Dusty, Twig said he was simply out of the mattress she wanted to buy. "Between the time they call and the time they get here, because it is such a great deal for the customers, many times we run out of stock We always offer to order them a same product, or a different product if they like something else, if we don't have it in stock," he said. Twig did not have any $200 queen pillow top mattresses in stock when we were there either, but he did have a floor model of the twin-sized version. There was not much to the pillow top, it was just a no frills mattress, but he did have several more upscale mattresses starting in the $300 price range; still a substantial savings compared to what you'd pay in mainstream stores. Twig said he sells 20 to 30 mattress sets a month to satisfied customers, plus a handful of bedroom sets.

Signs

Those signs they put all over town at the intersections are illegal advertisements. They should be fined for putting them up everywhere and trashing our roadways.
