WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Heads up about a traffic change on Market Street. It will now be easier to leave Target and Party City on New Centre Drive.

The city has created a right-hand turn lane to help cut down on congestion. The lane where drivers used to be able to turn left or go straight is now just for drivers to turn left.

"This was one we got a lot of funding for," city traffic engineer Don Bennett said. "It was a small project with a very small project, so it allowed us to use the funding we already had to make a fairly large impact for the intersection, which you can see, with a very small project."

The $150,000 project took about four months to complete. That's a bit longer than expected, because workers ran into sewer lines and had to work around a big transmission telephone pole.

The city is using its new traffic signal system at that intersection to better time the traffic lights.

Now I'm no traffic engineer,

Now I'm no traffic engineer, but I know that this project was a waste of money!

everyday traffic gets backed up on the northbound lanes of New Centre Drive to all the way past Sigmon Road, because there is only 1 lane for New Centre Drive and cars turning right onto Market Street, (and it's not just rush-hour either)

there is tons more traffic volume coming from S. College Road via New Centre rather then Kerr Avenue via New Centre,

I'll say it again: what a waste of money!!!!!

Since Target and Party City

Since Target and Party City created the need for this road work, should they not pay for it instead of the taxpayers?

Uhm...

As tax paying business entities I believe they did.

Don't think so...taxes are

Don't think so...taxes are for services received, not building roads that their presence creates a need for.

New turn lane

Great to see the well paid city traffic engineers actually had something done. However, if retiming the traffic lights for this intersection had been done the city could of saved the $ but hey anyone really care? Also, lmao >> "The $150,000 project took about four months to complete. That's a bit longer than expected, because workers ran into sewer lines and had to work around a big transmission telephone pole." << Are you kidding me ( workers ran into sewer lines and had to work around a telephone pole,,??? Hummm let's see traffic engineer paid how much per year went out to this intersection and was, "well guess we got to add a turn lane." > year later >> "Hey were'd that telephone pole come from ,,,?? and wait a sewer line as well....??" Wow can it get any better.
