Two female law enforcement colleagues had reason to celebrate today. Lieutenant Kathleen Cochran of the Wilmington Police Department and Major Rhonda Smith of the New Hanover County Sheriff's Department just graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. This is quite a feat that involved completing a ten-week academic program as well as a physical fitness test. Lieutenant Cochran said one of the biggest challenges was completing a 34-mile swim. "I'm extremely proud, to be the first female from the Wilmington Police Department to attend. A lot of people have gotten the yellow brick road for the physical fitness, but not many people get the swim award. To me, that was my biggest challenge because I'm not a big swimmer. It was a great personal accomplishment for me, so I'm very proud," said Lieutenant Cochran. Kathleen Cochran has been with the Wilmington Police Department for 19 years. She said she is looking forward to taking what she learned in the academy and applying it here in Wilmington.
