With education budget cuts on the state level, school officials at UNCW are finding ways to save money. UNCW is working to drop their energy consumption by twenty percent next year. The majority of costs on campus are generated from heating and cooling buildings. To cut costs, officials have replaced old equipment, switched light bulbs to more energy efficient ones and put motion censor lighting controls in classrooms. “Costs continue to increase and this is one area where we have control over and we can make savings,” said Tom Freshwater, the UNCW maintenance director. By reducing energy consumption by twenty percent, the university will save over $1 million in energy costs.

Energy reduction

Cudos to UNCW for taking a pro-active approach to the reduction in funding. Instead of the usual idea of raising tuition they looking to cut costs! Great idea.

UNCW Energy Costs

I would think that the University system would create an incentive program for Engineer schools to offer scholarship to students who develop energy saving devices using wind, solar etc for powering universities. Even here at UNCW we could see the use of the newest solar technology being used to cut costs. Maybe they could get incentive money to do so by going green.
