UNCW hosting ballet camp

Dozens of aspiring ballet dancers from around the world are spending part of their summer at UNC-Wilmington, getting training from world renowned ballet instructors. The students had to audition in front of the Carolina Ballet to be accepted to the training program. About a dozen students are from southeastern North Carolina. The program lasts for five weeks and the students train at least five hours a day. One local ballerina, Audrey Thompson, says she hopes the classes give her a competitive edge in the future. "It really helped me keep up because the summer classes that my school offered were only two days a week, but here it's everyday except for Saturday and Sunday so it's an opportunity for me to improve my skill over the summer and keep up my training," said Thompson. The Carolina Ballet will be performing August 1 and 2 at 8 p.m. at the Kenan Auditorium. The students will perform August 2 at 2 p.m. For more information or to buy tickets call the Kenan box office at 910-962-3500.

It's fantastic that UNCW is hosting the Carolina Ballet; this way, Wilmintonians are afforded the opportunity to watch first-class performances locally. I hope the Carolina Ballet return year after year!
