Visitors to UNCW Saturday could take a trip around the world without ever leaving the Port City. The 17th Annual Intercultural Festival celebrated the cultures and traditions of dozens of countries.

This celebration is led mainly by international student groups who share their customs with the public. More than 500 people were treated to food, dances and music, as well as arts and crafts. The goal is to promote cultural awareness.

"I've never had this kind of experience before," Hanae Matsui, a UNCW student from Japan, said. "So it's really nice to share cultures and our lifestyle."

"It's very important to keep our cultures alive so we don't forget our heritage, where we came from," said Rosita Nancy Carson of Wilmington. "I really appreciate all the other countries coming together to do the same."

Some of the performances included Native American music and dance, reggae music and a Japanese drumming group. The event marks the closing of the university's International Week.
