UNCW and the Wilmington housing authority have partnered to improve one community in our area. Hillcrest is one of the housing authority's low income housing communities. It is an effort to improve the social life for the neighborhood. “We're trying to get more social, educational programs back to the residents.” said Danielle Aldrich of the Wilmington housing authority. The community campus is basically an area where people can research, study and interact. Hillcrest resident Trevor Spicer thinks this will help kids. “You know keep the kids on the right path and avoid them getting in trouble and all that.” While there were events going on all day at the new community campus, the main attraction seemed to be the computer center here at hillcrest. Khalif Evans, another Hillcrest resident said, “I went in the computer lab for half the time I was here.” With programs ranging from a reading program for kids, to education on natural disaster preparation for the elderly, Aldrich hopes the community realizes the potential. “There's lots of different things and opportunities here that we're hoping people take advantage of.” Aldridge said the community campus should help residents access many of the resources that the University has to offer.
