BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- We have an update on a Troubleshooters report about a 16-year-old who was molested by his uncle in Bladen County. Even though the uncle, Jerry Squires, admitted to engaging in a sex act with the teen, he was not required to serve any jail time, nor is he having to register as a sex offender.
What's more, the victim got arrested at his school by Bladen County Sherrif's Deputies for engaging in the sex act.
Thursday, we finally got a response from the Sheriff's Office. Chief Deputy Phillip Little told us the victim gave his investigators conflicting statements, and that factored into the way they handled the case.
Investigators also say the victim was a willing participant in the sexual encounter with his uncle, but that's not what the victim told us. Regardless, according to the law, consent is no defense to a sexual encounter with a minor when you are serving in a parental role.
We still have a lot of questions for the Sheriff's Department. We'll share the answers with you when we get them.
