We have been following the installation of a refurbished gas chamber at the Brunswick County Animal Shelter. Last week, an industrial hygienist inspected the machine to make sure it met state standards. One valve needs to be replaced before the machine can operate. But Brunswick is not the only county that did not pass inspection. New Hanover and Bladen counties both failed inspections by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. Both counties have voluntarily agreed to stop using their chambers until they meet state standards.
