Sonya Stevens joined WWAY in June 2006 as the weekend meteorologist. She holds the Seal of Approval from the American Meteorological Society.
Sonya discovered her love of weather as an elementary student and following this passion has led her to many different places. She received her meteorology degree from NC State University. During her senior year at NCSU, she interned at NBC 17 with the Weather Team. Prior to that, Sonya interned at WCSC in Charleston, SC, during the summer of 2001. After graduating from NCSU in 2003, she accepted a job as a weekend meteorologist in Abilene, Texas. Within a year, she was promoted to morning and noon meteorologist. After 3 years in the southern edge of tornado alley, Sonya was ready to head back to the east coast!
In high school, Sonya stayed very active with baton twirling, playing the piano and the marimba, and dancing. She has actively pursued these interests after graduating. Her other hobbies include water skiing, rollerblading, biking, and hanging out with friends and family. In addition to those interests, Sonya joins her weather teammate, Jerry, in cheering on the Wolfpack!
Sonya grew up in Charleston, SC. Her parents and brother, Blake, still live there and are three of her biggest supporters. Sonya is excited to be back on the east coast, close to her family, friends and of course, the beach!
Sonya just got married in June, so she is a newlywed. Her husband, Ed, works at Wilmington Machinery. They reside in Leland with their two dogs, Blondie and Abbie.
