WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Wilmington Police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting that killed a man early this morning. No one, though, has actually been charged with the murder.

Police say 22-year-old Roshad Donta Jenkins was shot and killed Friday morning in the Hillcrest community off Dawson Street.

Friday afternoon officers arrested 32-year-old Willis James Sarvis on several drug and weapons charges in connection with the shooting.

Investigators say the two men knew each other, and they believe the shooting was drug related.

Neither Jenkins nor Sarvis lived in Hillcrest, but Rakim Davis and his family do.

“This is the first time I’ve seen it this close to me,” Davis said. “I’ve heard about it in other places, but this is the first time it’s been this close to me.”

Among Sarvis’s charges is shooting into an occupied dwelling. Davis says it was his home.

“They shot through the house, and the bullet went through the bathroom,” Sarvis said. “The police and everybody came, and the detectives found the bullet on the floor in the bathroom. They shot through the other side of the house through the window, but we still don’t know what happened.”

Davis says he was not home during the shooting, but his wife and 17-year-old son were. Davis says he hopes the situation will be under control soon, because he is worried about his family’s safety.

“I just hope the police can just keep everything a little bit calm around here than what it is, because it’s getting too crazy,” he said.

Sarvis is also charged with felony firearm possession and selling/delivering narcotics. Police have also recovered two firearms, one of which they say was used to kill Jenkins. The other, they say, belonged to Jenkins.

Both Sarvis and Jenkins have criminal records. Jenkins’s rap sheet includes assault with a deadly weapon, gun and drug charges. Sarvis’s criminal history goes back about 15 years. His most recent arrest was last month for allegedly trafficking cocaine and other charges. He served nearly seven years in prison for a host of offenses, including drugs, robbery and burglary. While behind bars he racked up a host of infractions. Jenkins’s record includes assault, gun and drug charges.

really you need to grow up regardless of your opinion this is somebody child….Do you have children….I hope not I feel sorry for them!

  • guesty says:

Yes, I have a child and maybe if you are lucky and have children they could come work for my child one day. He works hard in school with his advanced classes, participates actively in our church and excels in two different contact sports. The fact that “this is somebody child” really doesn’t matter. Isn’t everybody somebody’s child? Should we hold these thugs in high regard because they had a mother and most likely a father that was out of the picture? Yea, role models.

  • Rumplestilskin says:

Every single person on the Earth is “somebody child.”

It does nothing to alter the fact that this child was a criminal and druggie.

Remember what Aunt Esther used to say; “The TRUTH will set you free.”

    Accept the truth.

I believe that everyone who has commented thus far has demonstrated ignorance at some level. Whether either young man was in a gang or had a not so nice past is irrelevant; a mother has still lost her child over something I am sure could have been avoided and we all as adults should respect her lost and allow for grievance. The last thing a mother wants to see or hear hours after being notified of her child’s death is people sharing their ignorance and/or opinions. Please give her the same respect that you would desire at this time.

Often times in this world we look for someone to blame when things go wrong and we have all been doing it for some time now. I do not understand when you guys, along with the rest of the world will realize that this does not work. It has nothing to do with being black, white, poor, or rich, we all have problems in our communities. Instead of placing blame on one group or another we should focus our energy into change.

  • guesty says:

From the story: “Investigators say the two men knew each other, and they believe the shooting was drug related.”
Ya think? Kind of hard to beleive that aobut those two upstanding punks, err I mean thugs, oops sorry, I mean gentlemen.

  • kendra shuford says:

i actually grew up with him and he was never a bad person just a young man who got caught up in some bad things. hes not some gangster, drug dealer,or violent criminal. No im not saying he was perfect everybody makes bad choices but NO one deserves to die. no matter what some of you may think our community loved and still loves D.T. instead of pointing out his criminal record take some time and talk to your own children about the dangers of life in the streets! And maybe think about how his mother feels right now because she just may be reading this

  • Guest says:

I pray for his family may you find peace to move on……I know it hurts and I know your sad and I cry with you….He could have changed though….just over a year ago when he got shot in response to him robbing someone he could have woke up and changed his life….I hope this serves as a lesson to his friends however I know it wont but I hope it does and they find other jobs cause dying isnt much of way to make a living…….
    tough love

If the government would simply require entitlement recipients to undergo random drug testing, 75% of these people would be OFF the government payroll. Can’t pee straight…can’t get FREE money, very simple, very effective!

In order for me to receive a paycheck from the company I work for, I am required to pass a urine test, which I have no problem with. So here is my question: Shouldn’t one have to pass a urine test to get a welfare check because I have to pass one to earn it for them?

I want everyone to understand, I have NO problem with helping people get back on their feet. I do, on the other hand, have a problem with helping people sit on their butt – doing drugs while I work to EARN money and am forced to give to them.

Okay POLITICIANS, you want to make some more laws? Why don’t you begin with the method above? Do something that REALLY works for a change! What do you really do all day, for years at a time?

  • Das Weibst├╝ck says:

Probably stemmed from the little community “get together” earlier this week. Obviously the guys didn’t have to get up and go to work this morning being up so late on a week night.

Hillcrest is public housing so why is gang-scum living there or hanging out there? OH thats right the gang bangers just walk in and out and the residents cant stop it……. gangs wouldnt be there if they didnt have customers living there.

Where were the dozen Hillcrest residents that graduated from that HOPE Academy 3 months ago?

  • Guestered says:

I agree. I am tired of working hard and seeing my tax dollars go to people who have no ambition to better themselves and get off welfare, but if 75% (your provided number) do not pass a drug test and lose their “check” what do you think that will do to crime? Do you think it will force them to wise up and get a minimum wage job? I doubt it. Crime would go through the roof. Jails and prisons are expensive and maxed out as it is, so I don’t want to hear the “just throw them in jail” crap. We have some real problems in this country and the answers are not as simple as some might like to believe.

A side note. I recently canceled my cable (kept the internet service though) because I’m pretty much living paycheck to paycheck. I know a former coworker that is on some type of government assistance and she has cable. That pisses me off, so I am not defending welfare, just hate when people try to act like its so simple to solve our problems. BTW- she had cable when Bush was president too.

I have 5 children also all by the same man. I have a hard working husband and I am not on welfare. Maybe you should have finished school and been a respectful woman and you would not be in this situation. You want to tell your business to everyone so expect criticism.

  • GuestLee says:

OK, first of all, I had to read your post 3 times to try to understand what you were saying, and I still got only half of it. No wonder you’re unemployed. Who wants to hire someone who has deplorable written communication skills like yours?

Second, the working people get tax breaks/returns because they deserve them after people like you suck us dry. You know how to work the system and milk it for all it’s worth. Without us, you would receive nothing…no welfare checks, no food stamps, no medicaid, etc. I’ve supported you for over 40 years now. Get up off your a$$ and work for a living. You would be amazed how it would improve your character and your self esteem.

  • Guest says:

what about you so called hard workers whom loose there job and wind up on unemployment which is listed under welfare, under the us budget ..felony drug charge no welfare already..now marijuana is a misdmeanor under 1.5 oz … but you aint workin your butt off for somebody on welfare, you workin your butt off for the congress and the state ;to blow your money the way they want too ..nobody owe u nothin cause u work an somebody get a welfare check ..go to usbudget.com ..then think back when congress gave all them companys and private corporations billions of dollars ..them companys went overseas with there production and bank of america charge u interest and give u bad credit score ….what piss me off you people workin gettin all them new tax breaks/returns and unemployment too, the gov helpin you mo than us welfare, public housin people .i got no prob takin no drug test ,cause u gone have to take 1 too get unemployment check..

  • Guest says:

now how u expect me to work and pay for 5 children …when 3 of them daddy in prison and no child support ..the other 2 daddy unemployed ..i cant go nowhere and leave my babies to look for no job …and the lady at social services still aint called me ,cause im trying to get daycare help, so i can look for a job ,its hard when u only 27 got 5 babies and no GED..and oh yeah you aint support me,i dont owe u nothin , the government take your money and spend it how they want ..your paycheck dont say % welfare check ,it say social security, medicare, state, federal …

  • Guest461 says:

…I know people think like this and live like this, but nobody would ever write it down and publish it like this…would they?

    My, my!!!

  • Guest says:

Yea… people who are writing on this page are the problem? I think not. A community that turns an apathetic, blind eye to their under-educated, under-nurtured, violent youth is the problem. Pointing the finger at everyone BUT the families who are producing the children who are violent and disrespectful before they exit kindergarten is the PROBLEM. And by the way, the articles before this said that he was a 22 year old African American man, so that’s where that came from. (and spouting off your mouth before you’ve even gotten your facts straight- that’s also the problem.)

  • Guest says:

    Lets talk about being ignorant…

Where in the world did the article say the vicitm was a young black man. I didn’t read that… Maybe you should stop with the race card because it gets SO old and people like you are the problem.

  • GuestLee says:

Did you ever hear of a white guy with a name like that? It definitely identifies him as being black without having to say so in the article. Just trying to keep it real…..

  • Guest311 says:

all of the murders in wilmington so far this year have been gang related and have involved young black men, i’m just stating an undisputable fact

  • GOD CAN ONLY JUDGE says:

WHATS YOUR POINT…..LOOK AT THE ALL THE SHOOTERS WHO SHOT UP SCHOOLS
AND COLLEGES…CAUCASIAN MEN…AND I DONT SEE YOU TALKING ABOUT THAT..WHEN A BLACK MAN/WOMAN IS KILLED NO BIG DEAL…BUT WHEN SOMETHING GOES WRONG WITH A CAUCASIAN PERSON WE HAVE TO HEAR ABOUT IT ON NANCY GRACE..PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK..THE POINT IS A MOTHER IS CHILDLESS..AND NO PARENT SHOULD EVER HAVE TO BURY A CHILD..REGARDLESS OF THE CIRCUMSTANCE..IF IF WERE YOU THEN YOU WOULD SOMEBODY BY YOURSIDE AND CONDOLING YOU…GROW UP IF YOU ALREADY HAVENT OR MAYBE YOU NEVER WILL…….I SEND MY PRAYERS TO THE JENKINS FAMILY… MAY GOD BE WITH YOU IN YOUR TIME OF NEED…

  • Guest2726 says:

but I bet it is DRUG related

  • Guestt says:

every time a black indivdual dies doesn’t mean its GANG-RELATED that is so ignorant for you all to represent this as a gang violence just because he was black and in hillcrest really take te time and wait to see whats goin on before you start pending things on these young black men !!!

  • Guest says:

    So many assumptions.

  • Guest says:

Well let’s see. There was no mention of drugs or of gangs. But it’s still fresh and more info will be given to enlighten us more. Most likely at least one will be mentioned, or so I assume. However, until then, let’s not see ourselves as people we are not, which is judge and reporter. We were’nt there and haven’t a clue as to what happened, well we know the effect of what happened, but not the cause. And I would like to present this to you as well. The graduates of the program are just a few people who live in that community, if they are still there. They may have been asleep at that time of night because they, like you, may have a job to go to as well. And thinking off the top of my head, most drug arrests are of people who are selling or distributing the drugs, NOT using the drugs. No doubt there are plenty of drug users there. But I don’t doubt that they are in your and my neighborhoods, or communities as well. And don’t forget about the fact that a lot of the customers the drug dealers out there have are not people from their community. Which is why they are arrested, they don’t know the real customers from the undercovers acting as customers. I think that’s great. They need to be off the streets and out of these communities of people who don’t want them there anyway. I’m not defending the people who are doing wrong, but I am defending the innocent community of individuals who has no reason to be passively attacked because of the community they live in or because they receive funding from the government, or as we all say, “From us because we pay taxes,” as if none of them pay taxes. There are people living out there who work hard on legal jobs that get funding from the government as well. Please don’t forget that in your posts.

  • Guest says:

I bet this isn’t gang related either WPD?

  • Guest w/ sense says:

I DO NOT KNOW THIS GUY & DONT CARE IF HE WAS BLACK WHITE OR PURPLE, DONT CARE IF IT WAS DRUG OR GANG RELATED OR WHATEVER, I JUST KNOW THAT THIS IS ANOTHER LIFE TAKEN OVER STUPID S**T!! THE PROBLEM IS THE PUNKS W/ WEAPONS RUNNING AROUND TOWN..IT JUST SO HAPPENS TO HAPPEN ON THE POORER SIDES OF TOWN, THEREFORE IT MAKES IT EASIER 4 PEOPLE TO JUDGE. IF OTHER PEOPLE WOULD MIND THEIR BUSINESS & OWN LIVES SOMETIMES THEN THE WORLD WOULD BE ALOT BETTER OFF.. HOPEFULLY THIS YOUNG MAN & HIS FAMILY CAN LIVE/REST IN PEACE.. WITH THAT BEING SAID, MIND YOUR OWN LIVES PEOPLE!! ITS NOT YOUR PLACE 2 JUDGE!!

  • GuestLee says:

It is our business since he lived in our community and affected the lives of our children. This is a news comment area. That’s what people do here. If you don’t like it, don’t read it.

  • Guest says:

You talk about people running around with weapons ummmm wasnt he charges as a felon with a firearm?? So he must be one of these punks you taling bout right?

  • Guest says:

Race card or not your assumptions are ignorant, if violence was to come to your neighborhood could you stop it? If it is already a problem that has gained momentum then what can the residents do? Are the police not aware of these situations? I’m sure that no one in your community uses drugs. Why is it that when something happens people automatically want to attack poverty stricken people? Maybe if the people at the helms of job corporations quit using every little thing as a deterrent for hiring people there would be less people needing government assistance and overall Amerikkka would be a better place!

  • Guest says:

    What a dumb response.

You should have kept that ignorance to yourself.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

Exactly WHY do you think violence plagues your neighborhood, and not mine?

And please don’t blame corporate America because they won’t hire high school dropouts with extensive criminal histories who cannot speak or write proper English.

One of these days you may FINALLY realize that it’s not about race or income. It’s about character, education, demeanor, and a positive attitude.

We have more Black doctors, lawyers, judges and businessmen than ever. We have a Black president. We have a Black associate justice on the Supreme Court. The two prior secretaries of state were Black.

In 99.99% of their cases, they had at least one loving, caring parent or grandparent got them out of the swine-pit inner city and would not allow them to fall into lockstep with their hoodlum friends.

As long as you accept junior coming home at 3AM carrying a 9mm and more money than you make in a week, don’t kick when people DO judge and DO hold you responsible for your own community standards.

No one can turn your community around except YOU.

“I would tell young people to start where they are with what they have and that the secret of a big success is starting with a small success and dreaming bigger and bigger dreams, I would tell them also that a young Black woman or a young Black man can’t dream too much today or dare too much if he or she works hard, perseveres and dedicates themselves to excellence.” – John H. Johnson

  • Guest6858 says:

Live by the sword, die by the sword

  • GuestLee says:

Oh, I see, leave it to the police to solve the problem, right? Why don’t these communities get together and establish community watches and report strangers that don’t belong in their neighborhoods? Why don’t parents make sure their children are home at night with them instead of running the streets looking for trouble?

And no one is attacking “poverty stricken” people, as you suggest. I have lived paycheck to paycheck most of my adult life trying to support a child all my myself and praying that no surprise illness or situation would arise to take the food out of his mouth. It did, of course, on several occasions, but with God’s grace, we made it through. We are attacking people who have mile long records involving drugs, stealing, or worse. Why should you expect corporations to hire people with those kinds of records? Honestly, would you want someone like that working for you? If you don’t like “Amerikkka”, please do us all a favor and LEAVE! You’re a pain in our backsides and prejudiced as the day is long! Good riddance!

  • GuestLee says:

Common, one of your best posts ever. Well said….but what do you think are the odds that anyone will be open minded enough and really listen to what you just said? Oh, if they only would….

i live in a community where nothing bad happens, and i love that with that being said at time i wake up in the middle of the night and walk outside to smoke a cigarette, people don’t know why this young man was outside that night.everyone pays taxes rather their gettin help from the government or not just cause someones income dont meet your standards doesn’t mean that they are poor.i belive that racism is still in new hanover county beacuse of he remarks are being left for people to read, not all black people are poor,in gangs,on welfare or anything else, thats why as a parent i inform my children of white people playin the blame game on blacks, this is a county where blacks and whites can not get along cause they are always looking down on us,the district attorney hands out stiff punishments to these young men who is around to help these kids

  • GuestLee says:

Wow…your post was really hard to read since you don’t use any punctuation. Anyway, OK look, this guy was 22 years old, he had an extensive rap sheet, and he didn’t live in Hillcrest so he didn’t just “step outside” to grab a cigarette at 2a.m. He was obviously there for unlawful reasons. Since drugs are a part of his rap sheet, people are obviously going to think he was there because of something to do with drugs.

You ranted on about income, which has nothing to do with this, but… I’m a single mom who has worked all my life with no help from anyone to raise my son by myself. I know what it’s like to go without. There’s no crime in being poor; the crime is when you turn to doing something illegal to stuff your pockets.

Also, while you are informing your kids that white folks “play the blame game on blacks”, please inform them that their mother does the same thing to whites. You’re as prejudiced as they come, and you are working hard to make your kids hate and distrust whites. Shame on you.

  • Sharona says:

QUOTE “as a parent i inform my children of white people playin the blame game on blacks, this is a county where blacks and whites can not get along cause they are always looking down on us,the district attorney hands out stiff punishments to these young men who is around to help these kids”

yeah, your right. Racism is alive in well in this world. ( Look in the mirror lately)

Quote ” the district attorney hands out stiff punishments to these young men who is around to help these kids”

Have you seen this young mans rap sheet? THAT is what he is being judged by, His deeds. As God is judging him by those same deeds now.One can only hope that this young man had enough time as he lay dying to confess his sins to the lord.

  • Always about racism says:

Oh yeah whiteys just bringing down the black people. Get over yourself its people like you that “inform your children ” that whites are against blacks or that whites and blacks cant get along that help racism spread. What about blacks always using oh I didnt get hired because I was black or I cant do this cause iam black?? Its funny how this article turned to racism, not all whites are racist, and maybe you should inform you children of that.

  • Karen B says:

I am white and feel very badly that you feel this way Bonnie. Racism may not ever end. It is a fact of life that we all have to deal with. Just like pollack jokes and so forth. Now I feel bad that you are teaching your little ones that I am bad because I am white. That is racism, too. I’ve lived all over this country and Little Rock Arkansas in the early 80’s was the WORST, I was so ashamed and felt so bad for black people being obviously oppressed. The world can’t change though, unless we change ourselves first. My white children were raised to know the PERSON, not judge someone by the color of their skin. They have lots of black friends and white friends alike. That to me is the way it’s supposed to be. There is bad and good in all races. It is NOT a color thing.

  • Guest says:

Just saw this guy’s rap sheet. He had current pending charges for carrying a concealed weapon and possesion of a firearm by a felon. He pulled time for assult inflicting serious injury, possesion of schedule VI drugs, possesing stolen goods, assualt on an officer, assualt with a deadly weapon, and breaking & entering. Glad he won’t be around to harm anyone anymore.

I DON’T CONDONE THIS TYPE OF BEHAVIOR, NOR DO I CONDONE THE CHARGES OF DWLR AND SPEEDING WHICH ARE HIS CURRENT CHARGES BUT NO WHERE I LOOK DID IT SAY HE HAD A PENDING CHARGE OF POSSESSION OF ANY DRUGS!!!
