CHADBOURN, NC (WWAY) — It’s the traffic stop that turned into some serious charges. Earlier this week Chadbourn Town Manager Stevie Cox was arrested for impersonating a cop after a state trooper said Cox handed him a police badge and said he was the chief.

Cox is still on the job. We reached out to the entire Chadbourn Town Council to see what if anything would be done to Cox.

Last week Cox was pulled over for speeding. He was driving the town police chief’s unmarked Ford Explorer while returning from Raleigh on town business with the mayor and two members of the local ABC board.

Town council is not saying much about the incident.

“It’s too early in the process for us to do anything, and we’re referring all questions to (town attorney) Butch Pope,” Chadbourn Mayor Pro Tem Fax Rector, Jr., said.

WWAY spoke with Pope Wednesday. He explained the incident was a misunderstanding.

But while town council is staying quiet, the people of Chadbourn have their own opinion on the incident. Still many refused to comment on camera.

Some say the arrest of Cox is politically and racially motivated, while others think Cox, the mayor and the two ABC officials we’re trying to throw their weight around. Some think it’s just too early to say who’s really at fault.

“I just hope the best for the guy, ’cause you have to give him the benefit of the doubt until they’re proven guilty,” Chadbourn resident Mary Simmons said.

Rector was the only council member who returned our calls. We are still waiting to hear from the other five members.

Cox is schedule to appear in court April 12.
