COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) — An incident on a Columbus County school bus Friday has many parents worried about their children’s safety and well being.

The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office says a 15-year-old boy sexually battered a 12-year-old girl on a school bus.

School bus number 48 takes students from Acme-Delco Elementary and Middle schools to and from school every day, but Friday witnesses say one student crossed the line on a dare, and the victim’s mother says not enough is being done about it.

“Had this been a caucasian little girl and a black boy jumped on her, it would have been handled,” the victim’s mother Rochanda Darden said.

Darden says her daughter was fondled on her school bus Friday afternoon.

“Her clothes were all ripped up where he was holding her down, forcing her down,” Darden said.

Darden was told a boy on the bus was dared by his friends to hold her daughter down and put his private parts in her face.

“He got dared by three little boys, Darden said. “They bet him a pair of sneakers that he would not do it, and he did it.”

Darden says she was notified by a parent, not the school, of the incident. When she went up to the school Monday, she was told the boy was suspended for 10 days and that the bus driver was fired. Darden says she doesn’t think the punishment fits the crime.

“This is not the first time he has done this,” she said. “He has done it to several other little girls, and the bus driver knew and did nothing about it.”

Another concerned parent said her child rides the same bus and saw everything. She did not want to be on camera, but she says she cannot believe more isn’t being done. She said is sick of the problems at the school being overlooked.

“There’s never any repercussions whatsoever to what these children done at this middle school,” the parent said.

Darden says she wants to make sure something happens to punish those involved so they learn their lesson.

“I don’t know what’s going to happen next but, I’m going to push it to the fullest limit, because something has got to be done, because I wouldn’t want this to happen to somebody else’s child,” Darden said.

The Columbus County School Board says both the boy involved as well as the bus driver have been dealt with accordingly at this point in the investigation. There is no word on what will happen to the boys who dared the other child, but we’ve been told the video from the bus will be used in the criminal investigation.

Being Native American I find the comments to be somewhat out of date. As a Native American I know that both the white man and the black man contributed to the deaths of millions of “MY” people. The first slave in America came from America, an escaped Native American called Squanto who was kidnapped and taken to Europe as an oddity to perform for the wealthy aristocrats of that period. When the Europeans moved to America they also brought slaves with them call Indentured Servants who sold themselves for the cost of passage to America. This trade still continues today to provide cheap labor for underground sweat shops. As for the Black man in America it’s a proven fact that many slave traders were also black buying and selling just like the rest of the races. My point is that what ever color you are there’s a good possibility that former slaves were many different colors not just black and from many different countries not just Africa. So if you want to use the former slave and race card I suggest that you do research to find out the true nature of slavery through out history.

U know it seems to be everyone is judging this little boy and really no one knows what happen yet their are 2 side to this story and know this this for a fact. the truth will come out soon. For one if it is true what the boy did i am sure his parents will make him do the time ..But this girl is also known as a scholl lier and has been sent home from school for showing to much skin. and this yr alone she has been in iss and oss up to ten days as well so before any goes and JUDGES ANYONE LOOK AT UR LIFE cause when the good lord takes u he is going to be wondering why u were judging someone because none of us have that right this boy comes from good family morals and Disciplined family ..and Christian family and they are hard working parents no sucking off the walfare foodstamp system but i do beleave that some people have a struggle with life and need asst but ur whole life come on now people

  • Charles Walters says:

Blacks just reinforce the idea of them being on a lower intelligence level when they speak this way. If you want to be treated like you are intelligent then you have to act like it. When you speak like this you sound like a bunch of fools with no education and no brains.

  • jenn28 says:

ok im pretty sure if this was ur child you wouldnt b making this statement… would b lookin for answers to why this was goin on just like the mother of this child is doin, and second of all we as parents leave our children in the care of these people during an 8 hr period and EXPECT for them to be keep safe for any and EVERYTHING especially TRASH such as this!!!!

  • says:

Have you lost your mind ?????????????????????????????????”
These are children you’re dealing with!!!!!!!!!!!!!’
Why should they have to deal with with ilierit idiots whose been taught to do as they please? I can’t believe you’re treating them this way. They are children who shouldn’t have to deal with stupid morons !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Guest333 says:

For this boy to be that violent, he had to learn it in his own home or immediate environment. He is probably a sexual assualt victim himself, and that usually occurs with people the victim knows. This was clearly more than a silly dare among boys.

This was not a sexual crime, this was a violent crime, no different than rape being a violent crime.
I am with the mother and agree that the school had NOT dealt with this crime accordingly.

Mother of the victim, SUE everyone, even the bus steering wheel manufacturer, as you probably already thought of, but don’t bring out that warn out race card…we are sooooo sick of it! And… it causes racial unrest, because we are TIRED of it Too!

  • Pastor West says:

You are judging this little girl. What this boy done is wrong and there is no right in it. He should be punish. And I personally know this family and this little girl is being raise in a christian invironment. So don’t be so quick to judge. We as parents need to come together to save our children. As for those little boys I am sure the parents is dealing with them. We need to lift our children up in prayer and help them to deal with life crisis that they will face. Theses children has so much to deal with. Our children need our help.

  • Just-Us says:

What in the heck was this comment? I have never seen such an improper use of the English Language in all my days of grading school papers! If you were my student you would get an F-. I hate to say it but race shows itself in language skills. I just wonder how WWAY allowed this to slip through the cracks.

  • Charles Walters says:

Why should it matter what color she was or he was? This little pervert thug wannabe attacked her, and the school system tucked their tails and ran. I hope the DA has the fool put away for as long as possible. This is not a case of he made a mistake, he attacked a girl knowing what he was going to do to her, and according to the article he has done this before. Put him away as an adult, and keep him locked up forever.

  • Guest1983 says:

I’m sorry, but I fail to see how the bus driver is responsible enough to get fired. Did he/she dare the boy to do this? I’m sure it’s more important for the driver to be focusing on driving. Correct me if I’m wrong and the driver is in some way to blame for this, but from the story I just read it only states that the driver was fired and apparently for no reason of their own.

Why are you asking what race got to do with this and act like you don’t know what she’s talking about? She’s talking about if it was a white girl the boy would have gotten a whole lot more than a 10 day suspension.

….that would be *their*, I think a few need to get on their knees and pray. It’s not about ebonics, it’s not about the color of your skin, it’s about being fair, treating each other with kindness and love, taking responsibilities for your actions! Don’t beat each other up, prayer is a necessity!!! Especially now!

  • PNC says:

…Really, “race shows itself in language skills”? Where do you live? I don’t think that’s a fact for every city or state, maybe just in the town that you live in…

I think race shows itself in MANY areas around there!!!

  • Guest80962 says:

I have to agree that race has NOTHING to do with how this was handled. This happens all of the time on the buses and nothing is done about it aside from the occasional suspension. Since the question was specifically asked about if this was a white girl, I will answer that I personally know 2 girls that something very similar happened to and the first time the boy was suspended from the bus and the 2nd time he was given a 5 day school suspension. Not sure what happened to the 2nd girl, but the first girl had to have her parents start taking her to and from school because nothing was being done. So I can ASSURE you that race is not the issue.

  • PNC says:

*hood?* ….could you please define that word for us…

  • Clarification says:

Hood-Speak = Ghetto-Speak; Definition: The manner in which minorities speak to one another as to avoid understanding from educated persons.

well my friend had to go get her son off the same bus bc the bus driver called her bc he was acting up. ok if she can call a parent to come get the child that was cutting up, why couldnt she have called the school or the the childs parent when the incident happen on friday. i fill like she didnt take the proper action as a bus driver should have. i beleive more needs to be done to everybody that was involved including the bus driver.

  • Realist says:

Well, the punishment is definately not enough. This child is a sex offender. There are laws against “flashing”. Forget about the school system that’s not handling it. Go straight to the police and file charges.

This is NOTHING to do with race and everything to do with a school system not wanting to get slapped on the hand for having to report a sexual offense. It happens alot, to all races!

As for the bus driver, she could not have prevented it anymore than any of you could have prevented this from happening in Walmart, on the street, or in your own home. Perhaps she could have reported it more quickly, I don’t know. But NOBODY can totally prevent crimes from happening. They happen quickly!

  • BLL says:

You can’t blame the schools for everything. Most of the parents who have posted here seem to be full of that “in-your-face” attitude, blame everything on racism and are serious lacking in basic English skills. Fine examples they’re setting for these kids…

PS- If this happened to my daughter on a Friday afternoon, I’d be filing a report with the Sheriff’s Dept. Friday.

Why does this have to go to court? Let the family of the 12 yr old girl deal with the 3 boys. The court system does not work. It will be a long drawn out process and nothing will get done about it. These boys will do it again and again and again. Justice should be quick and decisive. Take care of the problem yourself.

  • IsraelHands says:

Those good family values and morals taught him by his family sure didn’t make much difference when he was holding that young girl down and putting his genitals in her face.
    Obviously well taught at home.

  • Barrack Obama says:

This boy is a threat to not only the school but to the county and needs to be taught a lesson. I have arranged a flight to Delco, NC to have a talk with this boy. If I think he has a unstable enviorment and is allowed to do these things i will send him to a juevinille state penatary. He will serve about three years and will be on house arrest for his first five months out of prison.

  • Gregoy Mills says:

At the first sign of trouble on the bus, the bus driver shuld have and is mandated to safely park the bus and secure the safety of every child on his or her bus. When your child steps on the school bus, he or she is a ward of the school district, the bus driver represents the school district and is legally sanctioned to keep your child safe and unassulted. There had to be children telling the driver what was going on and there had to be enough noise to warrent stopping the bus.

If I read correctly, this was not the first incident. If the school board released the driver, there had to be enough supporting documentation. But I do agree with others, the school should have reported the incident to the child’s parents and the poper authorities. However, as the parent of two daughters, the school would be named in the police report, as schools and school employees are manditory reporters.

there is no reason to take somthing like this that far, this is going to mess up his life. He`s not really though cause i have known him for my whole life.

If this is true and what the girl said took place. How would you feel knowing it was done to your child?Would it matter how long you knew him?if he was 13 or 15 it would still be a sex crime.I have known people all my life and never thought they would have committed sexual crimes but they did.try to put yourself in the parents shoe of the little girl.. maybe race don’t play a part but im white and I really think things would have been alot worst had the races been the other way around.I pray that the boy didn’t do anything wrong but if he did he should be punished more than 10 days home..

  • V says:

You are a teacher and make racist remarks. This is why “Blacks”, write this way (some). People this is the kind of person that are teaching our children.

  • Psyrix says:

Don’t forget Grammer is actually grammar. :)

Also this should not be about color at all, the boy should have been expelled and possible criminal charges OR have a psychological evaluation. Just my opinion.

  • Concerned parent says:

So basically what you are saying is that if a woman shows too much skin she deserves to be sexually attacked or raped? Whether this boy comes from a good home or not, his actions are his own. Whether his parents are on welfare or not on welfare is irrelevant. Gain some intelligence. I see your education level is quite limited. As it is with many in columbus county who can’t see past what’s in front of them. GET A LIFE!! No one deserves to be treated that way. In other counties his ass would have been served a warrant and locked up by now. So you say don’t judge this boy but yet you have already judged this girl because of disciplinary problems she has had in school. That is irrelevant. If this boy is a repeat offender and the bus driver did nothing, then that and his latest actions should be the issue.

  • guesty says:

Hood speak isn’t confined to one race. It seems to perpetuate in lower class, uneducated people.

  • Guest021 says:

from my understanding, the 10 day suspention is just for the investigation. IVESTIGATION people. no charges have been filed yet to my understanding. but its alway nice to see GODS swift and rapid judgement all over this page.

  • Guest 777 says:

After reading these comments, I am literally shaking my head at the ignorance. We know nothing about the parents of this boy, yet we are jumping to all kinds of opinions. This young man should be punished, and in my opinion ten days out of school is not enough. Race has nothing to do with it, children are children no matter what race they are. This kind of behavior must be dealt with by the school system as well as the Columbus County Sheriffs Department. We scream sue over everything like that is the answer, we should be worried about getting this girl help instead of suing someone. Think about this child and what is best for her. Another thought this young man might need some mental help also, I know no one wants to hear this but it is true. God bless these families, and a special touch to this little girl.

  • Parent says:

I have a question for you as a parent of this bus, why is this the 3rd bus driver this school year. I’ve talked to the original driver and she said she didn’t have a choice but to give it up. Won’t say why. I know she had a time with those middle schoolers. My child came home all the time telling me about what they would do and she would write them up and the kids would go on the bus bragging about how nothing was done. There’s your problem. And from all the things I’ve heard my child tell me about what goes on, on the bus. This could have been prevented if the principal and superintendent would have done their job instead of sweeping things like this under the rug. This new driver made a bad judgement call and was fired for it. The principal and superintendent need to be fired as well because this kind of thing could have been prevented. And the parents of these schools need to step up to the plate and be parents. Get involved with your childs education. Teach them respect. Your kids copy what they see at home. As for the boy that did this and the boys that bet him, all should be punished harshly to show this is not acceptable in this school or county. And if the parents have an issue with this let them spend their weekends in a jail cell to think of what kind of life their child is gonna have if they don’t buckle down on the parenting department.

  • Guest1983 says:

I got it the first time, you didn’t have to repeat it. I’m not saying that what was done was right, or that I don’t care about the girl that was assulted. I’m just saying, that from the report, it doesn’t say that the bus driver did anything wrong. There’s some people posting comments that things like this have happened before and the driver didn’t do anything about it. How does one know that when the report is so vague?
The report says that the parent was notified by another parent, not by the school. But who’s to say that the bus driver didn’t immediately pull the bus over and handle the situation and then contact and follow up with the school? And then it would be the school’s responsibility to notify the parents.
I guess asking for a complete report these days is asking a little too much.

  • Guest28401 says:

It’s not some unsolveable mystery whether black and white students who have committed the same offenses receive the same punishments. The school has to keep a record of students who are sent home, for how long, and for what reason. For a small school like Acme-Delco, it shouldn’t be that hard to tell from those records whether there’s a pattern of bias. Hopefully someone from the county or the state will review those records and clear the air. But the school does have a responsibility to treat its students fairly, just like it has a responsibility to keep its students safe. And all parents have a right to know for certain that it’s doing both.

You can’t just say “they’re trying to make it about race” and then write it off. Because sometimes race really does play a factor. And sometimes it doesn’t. That’s why we need to know the facts to decide.

  • Columbusctyresident says:

You are SO RIGHT!!! Columbus County is full of racists but not the way you would think…if you are any color other than black, you have no chance in this county. They claim to be discriminated against but having lived here my whole life I can tell you it’s the other way around.

  • columbusconcerned says:

it is a shame this happened and it must be dealt with sternly. it is a wonder the father or mother hasn’t seek him and his parents out and opened up a can of #@^&*!?!!. the driver should have been dealt with harder; she is the adult and the protector of all of the students entrusted into her care. the 15 year old boy needs to go to juvy along with the three whom dared him. take them to central prison in raleigh and scare the crap out of them. see if they walk around with the pants down there. then make them do community service at a female battered/abuse center. why didn’t the school bus driver see this coming and stop and call the law. this is rediculous, unheard of. next, these boys might be doing more than assaulting. it needs to go on their record, so if these boys make it to college, ALL students will know the trash they have around them. the county should be held responsible in making sure the girl had proper psychological help. why didn’t someone take care of this on friday. no excuse.

  • Guest2 says:

All school buses should have 2 adult monitors at all times. The driver cannot monitor behavior and drive safely. When children are that disruptive, a driver can not control behavior. The children involved should be suspended for the rest of the year. There are no exceptions to this policy. This is happnening throughout New Hanover County. Open your eyes to an everyday occurance. Talk to the kids who ride the buses.

  • Columbus County Resident says:

No, what is a shame is your use of language and thinking while identifying yourself with Columbus County. You speak as if you live down in the ghetto of Acme Delco. If you all would parent your children and stop raising ghetto bastards, this type of conduct wouldn’t occur.
Most of all, don’t throw the RACE card in the picture. You all cause racial problems because you cry race all the time.

  • Guest 930 says:

Don’t go on TV claiming this is a race issue… go file assault charges against the boy with law enforcement.

  • SurfCityTom says:

    this happened.

But what did race have to do with the incident?

Any bets on whether she has retained an attorney with an eye on filing a lawsuit for damages?

  • Guest1041 says:

Imagine that…….someone throwing the card!!!!!!……. What’s a shame is that people can’t get over crap and realize that we are all equal……we are here living life together. Stop throwing the card and get on with life….it doesn’t matter the color it is what it is and it’s wrong what happened either way they should be charged…..

  • Guest123456 says:

I hope I get to be on the jury to see that the boy that did what he did was punished and the school was as well for letting something like this happen. That child was attacked. She is twelve. No child should suffer this way. If it were your daughter or granddaughter how would you feel. I hope she gets a great lawyer because of the emotional damage done to her daughter will require years of counciling.

  • sevenseas says:

I agree it’s a shame that something like that happened but if you’ll be honest with yourself you know what the lady said is true, you can call it injecting race into it or whatever but facts are facts and that’s a fact!!

  • Guest6572 says:

I can answer that for you. I live in Columbus county, not originally from here, have lived all over the country. But I can honestly say Columbus county is the most racist place I have ever lived-but not in the way that this mother alleges. Actually, from what I have expreienced, the racism problem is exactly the opposite and they don’t think twice about pulling that ‘race card’ number.

  • Tired says:

YES!!! Race has alot to do with it. Sorry to say, but it does!!!

  • concerned1009 says:

The school system needs to discuss the issue of allowing middle and elementary school children ride on the same bus. As a parent in Brunswick County I would address the issue if this was the way of transportation. This is a very serious crime and no child should have to go through such. And for the mother this is not a race issue, if you wanted to protect your daughter you should first filed a police report and a complaint with the school board, now because of your actions your daughter does not have any privacy due to the fact of the media. Don’t get me wrong I do not blame WWAY for covering the story because it does grab people’s attention. I hope the justice system protects this girl because it seems that no one else cares about her.

  • parent says:

Why does race always have to be part of the issue? It is a shame that this girl had to go through this and all the boys should be taught a lesson, but race has nothing to do with it!!! A very similar situation happened at a brunswick county elementry school, involving several girls that were white, but it was not posted all over the news and race was not the issue. What happened to these girls is the issue!!!! This just shows how the adults, in which we put our childrens saftey in aren’t doing their job at protecting our children!!! It’s not just one county or school; and it has nothing to do with race. Something needs to be done and seeing that these incidents are happening at more than one county and more than one school the state needs to step in and do something; along with more parents speaking up and pushing the issue of our childrens safety!!!

  • OUT OF CONTROL says:

Being a mother of a Columbus County School student, this is typical of Columbus Co schools. What has to happen? Does a student have to loose their life to another student before the schools and the Board of Education finally takes serious messures to act accordingly? That also includes the bus drivers. Ive seen so many of the bus drivers turn the other cheek to so many things that happen on these buses. But i can garenttee u this if it was one of the bus drivers or school employees child then there would be something down more strict. This just burns my #$%%’ The boy needs to be charged to the full extent of the law. And the school employees that have turned the other cheek need to be repramanded as well.

  • says:

This is real nice here and my daughter rides this bus?She has not been in that school very long however she was in a better school before her mother switched her. This is just crazy i can’t beleive that this has been allowed to go on.Funny thing is as a father yet no one has contacted me nor did i know anything bout this situation. What if this would have been my daughter? They need to handle this situation better!!Looking at the schools in acme delco when i found out that my ex wife switched to there i could tell there was nothing but trouble there. My daughter’s hate the school’s yet there mother switched school’s because of free lunch and convenience for her because she lives way out past there,j/k.I hope they do something more than just fire the bus driver for know about this going on the whole time.CRAZY BUT IT IS ACME-DELCO SCHOOLS!

  • GuestV says:

I had a similar incident happen to me my freshman year in highschool. School officals were notified and nothing was done about it. I had to switch schools as a result of the harassment from other students for standing up for myself.
This is nothing new in our school system. I know this from personal experience.

  • Guestina says:

This is a future rapist. If he has done this before, he’ll do it again. If the law doesn’t punish him, I hope the parents will pursue a lawsuit. And the fact that the bus driver did nothing is equally disturbing.

  • Columbus County says:

You all want all of these paid positions. Are you ready for a TAX increase to pay for two monitors on the buses? How about some of you welfare parents that are birthing these problem children donate your time and become a bus monitor to help earn some of your welfare income? Stop having ghetto kids and parent your children and this will not occur.

  • Challengetheworld says:

Two monitors? Are you volunteering? Why should tax payers have to be subjected to the results of poor parenting? I guarantee this offender had little to no supervision and I am sure his parents are collecting a check each month to “raise him”. It’s time for civil lawsuits against poor parenting and this child should be and can be charged as an adult if the State wanted to take corrective action.

PS: This has nothing to do with race. Any race or nationality could have committed this crime, it has to do with poor parenting and a lack of follow through from the Columbus County School board.

Columbus County parents: Take notice, this could have been your child. Raise caine and have this kid charged. Get him locked up and charged as an adult. This is not a School issue, it is a Sheriff’s Department/State of North Carolina issue.

  • guesty says:

Well said. I have said in the past that if you are living off my dime and can’t/won’t find a job, you should be forced to do community service. No service, no more check. No more sitting around waiting on “free money.”

does race enter into this? Would a change of race saved the little girl from assault?

Put up or shut up. No more of those meely mouthed whinings. Be specific.

How, specifically, did race enter into this?

For the record, where was the little girl’s father? Most fathers would have been in someone’s face that very day.

But do not fear, Mom is considering a lawsuit. In lawsuits, the onl big winners are the fee sucking attorneys.
