SOUTHPORT,NC (WWAY) — After all the anticipation and public hearings on annexation, the time for a vote in Southport finally came. The Board of Aldermen passed the proposed annexation of Smithville Woods, Jabbertown Road and other areas north of Southport, but there may be a way to stop it.

“This is probably the most difficult decision I think the board has faced since I’ve been on the board,” said Kenneth Karn, a Southport Alderman.

There is a possibility that the Aldermen’s vote could be overridden. If a House Bill, titled the Annexation Reform Act of 2011 is passed, state legislators could nullify or reverse the action.

“These people continue to think they can force this through,” said Fred Gann, who lives in one of the approved annexation areas. “The game is over. They lost. The state house and senate will take care of it.”

Some say regardless of what happens, they’re not giving up.

“I think you can see out here in the room that you may need to budget for litigation,” said Ken Stewart, who lives in Area B of the approved annexation.

Pending legislation action in Raleigh, the annexation would be effective June 30th 2012.
