WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — It’s been one week since New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger attended a public meeting at his ex-girlfriend’s workplace. Berger’s actions led to his arrest for violating a protective order his ex Heather Blaylock filed. Tonight we finally know who first raised concerns about Berger being there.

We found an e-mail with a letter attached sent by Community Action’s Executive Director Cynthia Brown. In the documents sent to Community Action’s attorney and several others, Brown says she asked a sheriff’s deputy at last week’s meeting if it was appropriate for Berger to be there. Brown wrote that she questioned Berger’s presence because she was aware of the protective order against the commissioner filed by Blaylock, who works at the agency.

In a phone conversation Monday, Brown said she acted according to personnel rules. She said she was aware of Berger’s restraining order because Blaylock had provide Community Action with a copy of it.

Brown stressed several times during the interview that her actions were not politically or personally motivated as some have implied.

In the e-mail and letter sent out last week Brown wrote, “My overarching concern is workplace safety for the staff, children and parents given the history of this individual and his relationship with our employee.”

We reached out to Berger’s colleagues on the County Commission. Many declined to comment. Chairman Jonathan Barfield briefly addressed Berger’s latest arrest saying, “It is what it is.” He also said that the commission has already expressed its thoughts and concerns about Berger in the past. Back in September the board made it clear that they feel Berger should resign as commissioner.

Since last week’s arrest Berger has said that he was just doing his job as a county commissioner by attending the meeting and had no idea that’s where Blaylock worked.

We reached out to Commissioner Berger as well today, but have not heard back. His next court date is scheduled for January.

I’m going to attempt to translate…..Whiteville has Strickland New Hanover County has Berger. Why hasn’t WWAY given the same attention to Brian Berger as they have Senator ( agood senter) Soles? What are they afraid of?

That’s my best guess of what “d” was trying to ask. Honestly it seems like either of them can fart with out it being on the news so I don’t really see your point d.

agood – adj. Of a favorable character or tendency. ex.- RC Soles was agood senter before WWAY rode his back.

Senter – verb. 1. To send a lady off to get any given item. ex.- I senter to the store to get me a 6-pack, but they were out. 2. n.- A person that spends millions of dollars to represent people at the state or national level for only thousands per year. ex.- RC Soles was a Senter for over 40 years.

Seriously, please learn to spell and form a sentence before you post. The occasional mistake is going to happen but my goodness!

Here’s the link to the whole discussion on immigration from Fmr. Speaker Gingrich’s campaign website:

My personal praise for Mr. Gingrich on this issue comes as a result of this, on his site:

“We must reconcile the goal of legality with the reality that there are millions of immigrants currently here outside the law, some with a long set of family and community ties, and some with no ties. A system has to be established that establishes legality but no citizenship for those with deep ties, repatriates those with no family or community ties in a dignified way, and quickly sends home those who have committed criminal and other destructive acts.”

I remain impressed with Gingrich’s position on immigration.

“…and quickly sends home those who have committed criminal and other destructive acts.”

Do you believe that it would be considered a criminal act to enter into Mexico illegally? YES! Do you believe that it would be considered criminal and destructive to avoid paying your due taxes in Mexico? YES! Do you believe that the Mexican government will allow you to deface their flag in public? Absolutely NOT!!! Do you believe that the Mexican government will allow your daughter to illegally enter their country, birth babies and get free medical care while doing so? Another, absolutely not! Do you have any idea what the Mexican government will do if you are in an accident, without insurance, injure or kill a Mexican citizen all while driving intoxicated? You will never be seen again!

These are all very simple questions and I don’t blame the Mexican government for their stance. I do however blame the United States government for NOT enforcing our laws and allowing a geometric progression of illegal, non paying, irresponsible people to utilize the government benefits my tax dollars pay for while they enjoy the free ride.

We have a HUGE mess in this country that should never have occurred in the first place. There is nothing impressive about it, or the costly solutions to resolve it…if it even CAN be resolved.

Well said. I don’t agree with a lot of your posts, but I totally agree with this one. The mess CAN be resolved, if some of our politicians would grow cahoonas bigger than a marble.

“He is showing compassion for families living in America who arrived here the same way that most of our grandparents did.” You think of that as “impressive”?

If your Grandparents used the same methods of entering our country illegally, ducking under our taxation system, raping our health care system and sucking off of every government provided entitlement as the current wave of illegal immigrants are doing, you know absolutely nothing about how this country has evolved including the history of immigration or the “LEGAL” immigrants endearing participation in this countrys evolution.

Now, go rethink what you believe to be “impressive” as your ignorance outshines your knowledge of REAL history of this great country! One BIG tip for you! America was formed by the participation of LEGAL immigrants that worked extremely hard for very little. They appreciated Americas freedom, opportunity, they learned the English language and they gave back to their contry, not simply TOOK from it as with todays illegals!

In this case Brown should be throughly investigated by both State and FEDS FOR POSSIBLE MISCONDUCT and mismangement of public funds.
I am outraged by her conduct. It is nonsense the reasons she gave to wway3. For once, Berger was correct to be there at a public meeting–we all have a right to know more about Brown and her mismanagment.
The person that should have been arrested was Cynthia-shame on her—did someone put her up to it?

exactly. THey are both constantly in the news.

I think his point is to get an education, or no one will understand a word you’re saying.

“By giving us the opinions of the uneducated, journalism keeps us in touch with the ignorance of the community.” – – Oscar Wilde

Say whaaa in that there es-panyolo-fran-seys?

Ms. Brown is just trying to deflect the real reasons that Commissioner Burger was there… listen to talk from those people who are guilty of fiscal mismanagement of public funds to enhance themselves. This is not the first time a “non-profit” organization has had fiscal accounting issues!!

. . one day we will hear in the news that Berger flipped out and “someone” “somewhere” for “some reason” “made” him do something tragic. It’s coming. Men with domestic violence behavior and control issues are all alike. There’s a pattern they all follow and Berger has it, too. It’s just a matter of time. Got doubts? Read up on it.

I am one of those who voted for Brian with the hope that he would bring a new vision to our county’s political process. When I FINALLY thought that everything was progressing towards “OK”… that Brian was working effectively, going to meetings on time and generally performing to the “best of his efforts”; (all right, I’ll confess my recently acquired low opinion of him, to his limited capacity) HE DOES THIS.

Hey Republicans, look to Newt Gingrich for something that I find impressive. He backed off of the right-wing hardline on immigration. He is showing compassion for families living in America who arrived here the same way that most of our grandparents did.

Maybe, Republicans, it’s time to realize that the T-Party hardline isn’t the best way for you to be viable… you WILL need moderates to vote for your candidates. New Hanover County isn’t Wisconsin. I don’t think that we are really important enough here to be on the Koch brothers’ radar.

Really, Republicans, what you need to do is exercise your authority to get Brian Berger to resign. (Hint, Democrats in Mass. have just ended Barney Frank’s Congressional career.) Next, you need to cultivate a Congressional candidate with a local background and understanding of who WE are living in this region and what WE, the people want. Pantano just doesn’t make the grade.

This is a poor way for any administrator to handle this issue. Let this not detract from her misgivings (giving to herself) and allegations of mismanaged millions. Follow the money. Berger is a distraction and there is something rotten going on here.
