WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — For the second time in a month a Wilmington store clerk has turned the tables on a would-be robber. The owner of the store says the man who allegedly tried to rob the store is “lucky to be alive.”

The owner of A&J Food Mart on Princess Place Drive says Jaquan Martin said, “Please don’t kill me, please don’t kill me,” when his apparent attempt to rob the store went wrong.

Police say Martin fumbled as he pulled out a gun giving a store clerk a chance to pull a gun of his own. The clerk did not shoot, unlike a foiled robbery attempt last month at another store.

Abdel Homid owns the store right next to A&J. He says he would deal with a situation like that in much the same way.

“I feel like if anyone’s going to rob somebody they deserve what they get,” said Homid, who said his clerks are armed. “I instruct them if he pulls a gun on them then pull it back on them.”

The clerk that pulled the gun at A&J Food Mart did not want to speak to us on camera, but he did say off camera that Martin was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

A&J’s owner told us off camera that Martin’s mother came into the store and kissed the clerk, thanking him for not killing her son.

Homid says the clerk should have at least wounded Martin.

“They should have just let him stay there, for what and shot him in the legs,” he said.

Martin escaped with his life, but not from police. Officers caught him in woods near the store and charged with attempted armed robbery.

Last month Police Chief Ralph Evangelous stuck up for clerks who defend their store.

“It’s unfortunate any time anyone gets shot, but people have to do what people have to do to protect themselves,” Evangelous said.

Martin is due back in court January 5. This is not his first run-in with the law. The 17-year-old was supposed to be in court for separate drug charges Thursday morning. Instead he made his first court appearance for the attempted robbery Thursday afternoon.

Martin is in jail under a $30,000 bond.

Oh Please, let me go. I said I was “sorry”. Nobody waqs killed. I’m just a disabvantaged, underpriviliged “teenager”. It won’t happen agin. Let me keep getting Welfare, and gang-banging. I won’t get caught again, I promise.

…but the bottom line is that criminals should spend a little of their stolen gratuities to properly train themselves in the use of a firearm. Not realizing where your safety is, along with a sideways stance and holding a pistol “gangsta-style” with it rotated 90 degrees off-normal while flailing at the trigger just isn’t going to hit much.

Remember that citizens that legally arm themselves use legal weapons, are trained both in the class-room and by qualification at the range. Remember as well, that concealed carry permit issuance increased over 600% last year as violent crime went on the decrease. Personal restraint in a high-stress situation is one that even trained police have a difficult time dealing with. I’ll do my very best.

While I hope and pray that I never have a need to pull my weapon on another human being, if and when I discover a criminal thug endangering MY life OR the life of another individual in my proximity, my weapon will come out, seek a target and discharge. I’ll happily take a legal review by 12 of my peers rather than that of a desperate thug that doesn’t care about my life OR his own.

    YOU do as you like….

It is about time we fight back. Wilmington is at War with the DIRT BAGS, DRUG USERS/DEALERS, AND THE WANT A BE GANG BANGERS!!!!! Stop living in fear people of Wilmington and fight back. Stop being the pray and become the Hunter. For this we will all be better off when we thin out the garbage of this town.

  • taxpayer says:

would indicate your IQ is on par with that of Jaquan Martin.

  • RSimmons says:

Which is bound to happen. You have two dummies aiming guns at each other Neither has little if any firearms training and experience. I’m more scared of a clerk firing wildly across the counter than some kid waving a gun for $40 and a carton of Newports.

I’m all for people defending themselves by what ever means is necessary. But these store owners also have a responciblity for their customers safety when they are in the store. Is a customer’s life worth less than the $100 they might lose?

Hellllooo please wake up people!! There is no money in trying to rob a food mart in the Hood! This is Insane! The most u mite get is a couple of scratch off tickets and some phillies and a book of matches! But however i commend the store clerk for saving that young mans life. Maybe he will take this as a lesson and strive to do better in life! MeDatsWho!

  • Guest238 says:

He had better be glad Ilario (Killer) Pantano wasn’t there because he would have about 16 holes in him even if he hadn’t been armed.

  • Guest99x says:

RSimmons, you got that right! I’m more worried about armed psychos with bad attitudes. Defend your property and home, I have no criticism of that. I have criticism aplenty for the sickos cheering others on to “shoot to kill”…

  • Guest461 says:

99X and PerSimmons, you’re an accident waiting to happen. So, tell us more about the people you term as, “the sickos cheering others on to “shoot to kill”… There is NO cheering on here, but I can tell you for a fact that the citizens of America are getting sick and tired of being ripped-off, robbed, raped, beaten and murdered by those that aren’t used to having people defend themselves. The citizens are fighting back and will only get stronger. They are already smarter….well, except for a few…(hint, hint).

You can criticize that and call them sickos all you want. Like I said before, curl your shaking body with your sopping wet panties up in the corner of that convenience store as the Thug takes what he wants and spits on you.

From my viewpoint, YOU’RE the one that needs the help! Consider enlisting in your local concealed carry class and put a couple of thousand rounds out at the range. There’s a starter for you.

  • Guest99x says:

Well, 461, lets start with this: RSimmons made a sensible point that inspired me to strongly agree with him or her.

On my own review of the posting policies on this forum I did NOT discover that you “right wingnuts” have any exclusive license to demean and insult those with whom you disagree. What’s wrong with you Coultergeists anyway? You’re quick to dish up insults but very defensive when challenged. Your invective has failed to change my belief that those who called for “shoot to kill” are sick.

I can tell you this as an observed fact, during the few “scrapes” I’ve been in over my lifetime the puddles left on the floor came from the bigmouths, the so-called toughguys. Be assured that there was nothing wet in my shorts. By the way, if you have an interest in men wearing panties, thanks to contemporary liberalism you no longer have to suffer alone!

Back to the topic. Right can become wrong very quickly when firearms in the hands of unskilled persons are added to a volatile situation.
We are close to the anniversary of the Bernhard Goetz subway shooting which happened in 1984. It isn’t just today that citizens are “fighting back”. I am quite sure that Bernie Goetz went to the range and squeezed a trigger more than a couple times in order to gain the proficiency to drop four thugs who menaced him.

Considering reasonable defensive principles as we think about Goetz we see that he was outnumbered four to one by “youths” who were larger than he. One of these “youths” menaced him with a screwdriver while asking for money.

Goetz did the right thing. He defended himself.

To continue with your metaphor, 461, it wouldn’t be a far stretch of the imagination that there was some voiding and evacuating happening that night on that train…

Four thugs down with four bullets. Great shooting Bernie!

Here’s where things went wrong; Goetz expended a fifth bullet into the back of a man who was down. That decision damaged Goetz’s life forever along with the offender who he paralyzed.

Goetz’s failure was not exercising personal restraint after gaining control over his attackers and this judgment lapse cost him dearly.

Today, at this minute I am very pleased with the restraint shown by the shop-keeper for not discharging his weapon into this perpetrator. I am also pleased with the restraint shown by the victim of the truck break-in discussed on another thread.

Armed citizen hotheads are a cause for worry. It isn’t IF someone’s going to get hurt, it’s WHEN.

Thank you, and I know I don’t owe anyone here on this forum a comment but As a single mother doing my very best to raise a descent child or children in today’s society is very difficult, but I will never stop trying. I just couldn’t let any of these comments to go on without responding. It is against my nature. But I have to tell you thank you for your post. So much negativity on here, it warms my heart that at least a few of them are positive. have a blessed day.

  • Grand Ole Party says:

So it is your belief that the clerk was in the wrong? That he should have allowed the thug to pull the gun and just take his chances? Pull the race card all you want, the bottom line is simple, you are just as stupid as the wanna be thug.

  • guesty says:

Sorry chuckles, nobody has pulled or played any race card. It is the criminal that we are tired of. Notice all the posts on the story about the white boy that tried to steal from the vehicle of an off duty police officer and the white boy that tried to rob the Bojangles in Ogden.

Armed robbery isn’t a mistake, it is a conscious choice and the results of poor upbringing.

This the responsible parent here. I put all caps on my post because if I could have Yelled it to the world then I would have. However your comments are just what they are, comments. I have always tried to let my child learn from his mistakes in hopes that it would make him a better human. Regardless of popular belief over his recent run in with the law. A as far as my Methodology as A Mother goes it would seem as though I have faltered, but picture this, he is behind bars and I will not be posting any bails and have never posted any bails in the past. One day he will get it. Hopefully this will be his wake up call. But GOD only knows. Right and wrong was the first thing I taught him coming up, and shy of putting a security camera into his eyes or wiring him with Surveillance equipment, I did what I could raise a young black boy into a man on my own, so forgive me if it seems as though I have failed. But as you so elegantly put it he is not a man yet, so therefore he still has time. Have a good life and with prayer and me giving my son over to a POWER HIGHER THAN MYSELF, HE WILL BE SAVED. Have a good day.

I’d like to some evidence to back up what you are saying about my son when it comes to gang involvement as far as his arrest record unless you are in the judicial system I can’t imagine you having the authority to have his records. Thanks for the ‘vote of confidence when it comes to actually knowing that my son will be dead and me needing to get the funeral home on the line. When that day comes hopefully it’s later rather than sooner, and he does get his act together. I DARE YOU TO COME BACK AND APOLOGIZE OR AT LEAST LOOK ME UP SO I CAN SAY. GOD HAS A PLAN FOR MY CHILD, THAT IN THE PAST NEITHER YOU NOR I COULD EVER IMAGINE. thank you for your time. have a nice day.

  • A REAL MOTHER says:

TO ALL OF THE PEOPLE HERE BASHING MY PARENTAL SKILLS AS A RESPONSIBLE PARENT CAN WALK A MILE IN MY SHOES. MY SON ISN’T A BUM, HE’S A STRAIGHT A STUDENT, WHOM BEFORE THESE PAST INCIDENTS ACCORDED IN HIS LIFE, HAS A MOTHER WHO RAISED HER SON TO RESPECT THE LAW OF THE LAND AS WELL AS THE LAW OF HUMANITY. SO BEFORE YOU MAKE CARELESS STATEMENTS SAYING THAT THE PARENTS SHOULD BE PUT INTO JAIL BECAUSE OF THE ACTIONS OF THEIR ALMOST GROWN CHILDREN MAKE, YOU REALLY NEED TO COUNT YOUR BLESSING AND PRAY TO GOD THAT NONE OF YOUR CHILDREN EVER GROW UP AN DISAPPOINT YOU. I WOULD HAVE YOU KNOW THAT BEYOND WHAT THE NEWS MAY TELL YOU ABOUT MY SON, I HAVE RAISED HIM WITH MORALS AND VALUES. AND I HAVE TRIED MY VERY BEST TO KEEP MY CHILDREN FROM DOING FOOLISH THINGS. BUT ONCE THEY GET IT INTO THEIR HEADS TO BE FOOLISH THEN THERE ISN’T MUCH YOU OR I COULD DO TO DETER THEIR IDEAS. SO ONCE AGAIN BEFORE ANYONE ELSE WOULD LIKE TO POST COMMENTS ABOUT PEOPLES PARENTING SKILLS OR HOW THEY RAISE THEIR CHILDREN. YOU FIRST REMEMBER THIS.. NONE OF US ARE PERFECT AND WE MAKE MISTAKES, AND I WILL FOREVER BE HONORED THAT THE CLERK IN THE STORE SAW THAT MY SON NEEDED TO BE IN JAIL AND NOT IN THE GROUND. SOMETIMES IT’S THE PEOPLE YOU HANG AROUND THAT ALSO INFLUENCE THE DECISIONS YOUR CHILDREN MAKE NO MATTER HOW YOU RAISE THEM, OR HOW YOU HOPE AND PRAY THEY WILL BE INSTRUMENTAL COMPONENTS OF OUR SOCIETY. I DO KNOW THAT WHAT HE DID WAS WRONG AND I PRAY TO GOD THAT HE LEARNS A MUCH NEEDED LESSON FROM HIS ACTIONS, BECAUSE BULLETS FLYING THROUGH THE AIR OR NOT HE IS WHERE HE SHOULD BE AFTER MAKING POOR CHOICES. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.

  • guesty says:

This isn’t your little babys first time in the legal system. Since he is a validated gang member of the Folk Gangsters Disciples, I’m sure this won’t be his last run in. Not until he is killed. He has been arrested for drugs many times, resisting police and now armed robbery. He is nothing more than a punk.
Unless you can straighten him out, you better start planning and preparing to have his funeral. As a gang member, his death will happen sooner than later.

  • Challengetheworld says:

    Dear Real Mother:

You have a real opportunity here to scare the living s*** out of your son and turn him around. The friends he kept must have taught him robbing a store was ok. The only way to rehab your child is to get him out of this area and away from everything he knows. He is lucky to be alive, however, he may not be that lucky the next time.

You must accept that the citizens of this town are threatened by anyone who tries to rob our businesses. You cannot defend your parenting because somewhere you faltered. Your son is still a child, however, old enough to know better. So unfortunatley, you must take a good look at yourself and find out what signs you missed.

No one is questioning your faith or the love you have for your son. However, it is natural that we question your methodolgy and your ability to maintain control of your child. If you want to really make a difference make sure you leave him in jail and when he does get out, make sure he realizes his free pass is over.

He must be held accountable and you must see to this. Do not confuse the love of your child with the duty you have to also instill to him at any age the difference of right and wrong.

  • guest111 says:

  • JAXSON_BLAH says:

i don’t doubt that she’s a good mother, or that she tried to keep her son from living the life he has chosen; thing is that once you are in a gang, YOU ARE IN! the only exit is in a box, unless of course she plans on moving, and even then who is to say her son will change his behavior. He may just find another set, same gang, same BS lifestyle, etc. my heart is with the mother tho; i hope that you begin to live for yourself… sometimes we have to just love from a distance. it may seem harsh to say, but its real. If Parents keep patting their kids on the hand saying “dont do that anymore” then what REAL lesson is learned. None. i say let him sit there. and after he gets out if he still continues to repeat the same actions, wash your hands with him all together ( loving him from an even longer distance) continue to encourage him to change, and most importantly CONTINUE TO PRAY for HEALING/CHANGE in him.

  • Guest111 says:

The parents of ALL these young thugs should be taken in to jail themselves. It’s their JOB to keep up with their children. They should be held accountable for their kids. You can’t turn them loose on the public and expect anyone to give a damn about what happens to them.

  • guesty says:

Employees at A&J Food Mart on Princess Place Drive say a man entered the store just after 4 a.m.

He isn’t a man, just another little punk boy. What business does a 17 year old have being out at 4am on a school night. Wait, I know. He dropped out of school after discovering he can sponge off the taxpayers and commit crimes to supplement his income.

But I’m sure he is a great guy, goes to church, picks up trash on the roadside and is all around pleasant to be with. Gag.

Lets hear all the excuses from the criminal supporters.

Another low life in Wilmington. He wants to act like bad guy throw him in jail with everyone else see how he likes that. Just another low life thug off the street, doesn’t care about anyone but himself! I have no care nor sympathy for him nor his family.

Soon you will see or hear on tv oh no not my baby he’s such a good child! Wake up call mom and dad. He’s far from sweet and innocent! Hope he serves his time in jail. I am sure he doesn’t have a job and now he will really have hard time finding one with these charges against him, but who would want to hire him anyways!

Another one day many more to go!

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

..start killing them. If they are reaching for a gun and you get yours out and on target first, please eliminate the need for a trial and incarceration. Take them out and do society a favor. Bet ya he’s already out of jail. If not, he will be soon. This isn’t the last we’ve seen of this dredge of the earth. We could blame the parents but that would assume that he has two caring parents… what are the odds of that? Stay tuned…

How do you let the cops do thier job when you are unarmed and DEAD at 4AM???? Kinda hard to call 911 at that point….fool

  • Guest228 says:

right now, the pawn shops are busier with people who work at these local marts buying a gun. My question, why not hire off duty police to sit at your store, have a police car sit at the store, or even have the police do rounds every hour at your store..I’m sure it cant be that expensive, probably the same price of a hand gun? Keep advocating vigilante and you are going to have inexperience gun toting individuals ready to pop off someone just because they may “look” like a robber. Crime will always happen, thats the price in owning and working in these types of businesses.

  • William says:

Store clerks a LEGAL RIGHT to arm themselves. I would even say they have an obligation to his/her family to preserve their life.

So this dum**** decides he wants to rob another. He goes in either having or suggesting he is armed. This completely innocent human who has a husband or wife and 2.5 kids at home. This person EARNING their way in life has about 3 seconds to decide him or me…

Well I would hope that HONEST WORKING clerk take about 2.5 Seconds to aim and squeeze however many rounds it takes to feel they have stopped the threat, aiming right at center mass.

He CHOSE to rob and another is lawfully armed and shoots and kills.
Too d*** bad. Society has one less thug and the world is a better place.

AND AN INNOCENT WORKING CITIZEN GOES HOME…. sounds like a fair deal.

  • thegiant says:

  • Guest2020 says:

The kid was going for his gun, not wearing a hat on his head that was hung low and not in the back as he was walking to the back of the store to get a drink. He had a gun, the clerk had every right to produce his own gun and he even had the right to shoot the punk. This is not the fella’s first arrest. It’s not even his second, so don’t go feeling sorry for him.

If you want to take your chances that you would even make it to the phone to call the police, you go ahead and do that. Those of us who believe in protecting ourselves, our families and our properties will do what is necessary to do so. If you don’t like our right to bear arms, you are welcome to go to Britain where you can shoot a burglar and be the one who goes to jail. If you don’t like how we Southerners are willing and able to protect ourselves, you are welcome to go up north. We don’t want your kind here anyway.

Also, I would rather the punk who intended to rob the place to be the one at the morgue instead of the clerk who is trying to make an honest living.

  • RESPONSIBLE PARENT says:

I appreciate your comment and statements that you made were valid. My son is where he needs to be tonight and I am guessing for much more days or years to come. I believe as well that the police should do their job especially when people make foolish decisions which could cause them their lives as well as others. All I can really say on this matter is that I am very great full to the clerk for not shooting my son, and am very disappointed in my son making that decision to do such a dangerous thing.

  • Guest28451 says:

The reality is the individual who chooses to defend their store has the right to do so at the same time if they shoot an unarmed person I hope they have video proof of the attempted robbery. As far as Im concerned if somebody comes in a store and attempts to rob it saying they have a weapon they are fair game for a double tap to the chest. I was taught at an early age you must always assume when a weapon is pointed at you that somebody intends to use it for its purpose which is to maim or kill and you can never assume by handing over the cash they still wont use the weapon period.. Your assumptions are asinine. Nobody in their right mind is goign to pull out a gun and start playing Dirty Harry when somebody has their hands in their pockets walking to the back of the store to get a drink. Now admittedly at 4am I might be a little more leary and watch them carefully in case they decide to try anything.. In my 2 brief times working in Convience stores the times I was overnight the store was locked and we had bulletproof glass and all transactions were done through a slide drawer (even if they wanted a drink it would fit)… The other wasnt open 24/7 but we did have a silent alarm and strict orders to hand over the cash if robbed but I disliked the policy of not being allowed to defend ourselves despite having a legal CCW permit.

  • pecanpie says:

I am pleased to see finally these convienence stores defending themselves against criminals. The police cant be everywhere and this criminal is lucky to be alive.

This is about standing up for your business, not minorities. If you try to break into my business or my house, I am going to shoot you.

  • Guest461 says:

…the police are only minutes away! People realize this and are continually arming themselves for self preservation. In this world where some increasingly feel it acceptable to rob, steal, cheat, beat, molest, rape and murder other human beings, we are exercising our right to protect ourselves. LEGAL gun purchases and the issuance of concealed carry permits are accelerating as never seen before and will only increase.

This is NOT vigilante justice, this is self protection and preservation my dear idiot. Nowadays, the thug criminal must not only be concerned about the late night cashiers that have a weapon, but should also consider that nice looking woman standing behind him with a .40 cal at hand!

This world is changing fast Buckwheet and the honest people are adapting well. So, as you sit in the dark corner of that convenience store while shivering with warm liquid in your shorts, you had best hope the hell there is a citizen on YOUR side willing to step up for what is right. Remember…the police are only “minutes” away…

  • Grand Ole Party says:

    Definition of VIGILANTE

: a member of a volunteer committee organized to suppress and punish crime summarily (as when the processes of law are viewed as inadequate); broadly: a self-appointed doer of justice.

Please inform us all how protecing yourself against a subject trying to rob you with a deadly weapon falls in this category.

If a person enters your home intent on robbing you with a gun, are you telling me that if you had the opportunity to protect yourself you would instead sit still like a grazing sheep? I guess some of us (the clerk) are sheep dogs and some of us are just the sheep(YOU).

Did you also notice you are the only one bringing up the race issue? Do you know why that is? It’s because you are not only a racist sheep, but a hypocrite as well.

  • Guest228 says:

When a trigger happy clerk actually kills someone who might not have a weapon on him, you guys are going to cheer and applaud that? Or maybe yourself might walk into a store with a hat over your head and head hung low and they mistake you as robbing the place and shoot you, would you be applauding then? Or maybe you as a minority walk into a gas station at 4am in the morning and have your hands in your pocket and find a bullet in your back as you walking to the back of the store to get something to drink, would you applaud that too? You guys are awarding stupidity and carelessness. Let the police do their job, isnt that what they are getting paid to do?

I AM A MOTHER WHO HAS DONE HER VERY BEST TO RAISE A GOD FEARING, HONEST, KIND, RESPECTFUL, BLACK MALE IN TODAY’S SOCIETY. I KNOW THAT WHAT MY CHILD DID WAS A CRIME AND I DO NOT CONDONE IT IN ANYWAY. HE HAS MORALS AND VALUES THAT HE GREW UP WITH AND IN THE END HE CHOSE NOT TO FOLLOW THEM. HE IS WHERE HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE.. IN JAIL FOR HIS FOOLISH ACTIONS OF ENDANGERING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING FOR WHAT; YOU NOR I WILL NEVER KNOW. HOWEVER I AM GREAT FULL TO THE STORE CLERK WHO CHOSE NOT TO SHOOT MY SON. AND I TOLD HIM SO. AS YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD ON THE NEWS AS WELL.
BOTTOM LINE HE HAS TWO CARING PARENTS WHO LOVE AND DOES NOT CONDONE HIS BEHAVIOR. I ALSO AGREE THAT HE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN OUT AT THAT TIME OF NIGHT, BUT IF YOU HAVE CHILDREN YOU MUST KNOW THAT YOU CAN NOT BE WITH THEM 24 HRS. A DAY. I HAVE OTHER CHILDREN IN WHICH I HAVE TO RAISE AND HOPEFULLY DO A MUCH BETTER JOB AT KEEPING THEM FROM MAKING THE SAME MISTAKES AS THEIR BROTHER HAS. SO BEFORE PEOPLE MAKE RASH COMMENTS ABOUT A PERSONS ABILITY OR LACK THERE OF TO RAISE AND TAKE CARE OF THEIR CHILDREN; YOU MUST GET BOTH SIDES.
HE IS LOVED AND SUPPORTED AND I WILL ALWAYS BE THE CHEERLEADER OR GUARD WHEN MY CHILDREN MESS UP. BUT I DO KNOW THAT WE AS HUMAN ARE NOT PERFECT AND WE DO MAKE MISTAKES. SINCE MY CHILD IS STILL BREATHING HE HAS THE OPPORTUNITY TO LEARN FROM HIS. THANK YOU FOR THIS PLATFORM. AND HAVE A GREAT LIFE. BECAUSE AS LONG AS THEIR IS A GOD I WILL CONTINUE TO PRAY FOR MY CHILD AND OTHER CHILDREN THAT GO OFF AND MAKE STUPID DECISIONS THAT AFFECT THEIR LIVES AS WELL AS OTHERS. TO GOD BE GLORY.

I applaud your post but you dont owe these bloggers any explanation of your family choices. Those people sit behind a computer and play “racist tag” on any black crime articles that WWAY puts up. Its clear that you love your son and are doing the best you can. Dont ever give up on your kids. Hopefully this setback for your son will be his last. We all make mistakes and not one blogger on this forum can say otherwise.

  • A Mother As Well says:

What you have said is so true. You can do everything in your power to set your child on the right path, but as they get older, influences from many different areas of a child’s life creep in and some children do not make the decisions that their upbringing would have predicted. You obviously raised him to follow a different path but he chose another. I am glad he was not killed so he can turn this around.

So many people are so willing to blame the parents, the teachers, the friends, the economy… The bottom line is this: Each person is responsible for his/her own actions, no matter how they were raised.

    God Bless.

Hopefully this is a wake up call for your son. Things could have been much different and you could have been sitting with him in a hospital or planning a funeral. Your son needs to realize that he has been given an opportunity to make a new start and use that to turn his life around. If he doesn’t, his future is bleak.

Keep up the good work with your other children and may you be blessed.

I applaud your efforts at shining a light on parents of children who make the wrong choices. My husband and I are currently going through some challenges with our 18 year old daughter. We are both hard working parents of 3 paying a mortgage in good old Cary, NC. I say that b/c it doesn’t matter where you live or how much money you have, kids make dum decisions. We learned that our daughter, who had a job at the time mind you, went into a department store stealing makeup. We were shocked/baffled/hurt/disappointed.. everything you can image we felt it. Our daughter is a teen minister, at the time had just went to her senior prom which I was so elated about. So see, it came as a surprise when we learned of what she did. It’s not a “hood” thing.. it’s called Choice. So the parents that are doing all they can to raise productive citizens, my hats off to you. We can only pray for our children that they will learn from their mistakes. I too am glad that this situation did not involve anyone being harmed. Keep uplifting your child and let him know that it’s not too late for him. Maybe he can mentor troubled children one day. Give them hope. Our children are growing up in a drug/sex/money crazed society. The number one show on MTV is Jersey Shores…enough said right that. Blessing

God bless you and your family. I pray your son turns his life around after this. I commend you for posting what you did. You are a wonderful mother and I agree with you 100%. I am a mother also, of two small children, and I pray my children stay on the right path. But we do all make mistakes in life. Thank GOD your son was given a 2nd chance at life with this mistake. Do not worry what people say on here. THe world is full of EVIL people that love to talk junk. Keep your faith and hopefully everything will be OK. :) Oh, and for everyone reading this, I am a WHITE FEMALE MOTHER OF 2. I am not related to this person nor do I know them-just for the record!!!

“why not hire off duty police to sit at your store, have a police car sit at the store, or even have the police do rounds every hour at your store..I’m sure it cant be that expensive, probably the same price of a hand gun?”

You can buy a used revolver for like $200. Is that cheaper than hiring a Security Guard? Yeah for a night, but not for very long.

We don’t have enough officers to have a cop at every convenience store.

Isn’t it illegal to act as a “vigilante” ? If so and the police have not charged this clerk or the one last month, then I think these individuals are simply protecting themselves when threatened with a firearm.

  • Citizen of the Republic says:

    Well, lets see.
1 uniformed officer $15 per hour.
1 marked police cruiser $10 per hour.

I’m sure those are low figures, but it will do to illustrate your lunacy.

    Total $25 per hour.

    $25 x 24 hours a day…..$600 per day.

    $600 per day x 7 days a week…..$4,200

    $4,200 per week x 52 weeks a year….$218,400 per year.

    $218,400 x 20 years…..$4,368,000.00

    Now the good part.

    1 legally purchased handgun….$500.00
    Concealed carry class…….$70 bucks?
Concealed carry permit……$90 bucks (which includes a background check, which the fumbling fool definitely couldn’t pass)
    Holster…..$30
    Ammunition…$19

    Total $790.00

The ability to defend yourself legally against a person too lazy to get off his dusty A@@ and work for a living…..PRICELESS

So, to all the criminals, white, black, blue, or green, your on notice.

Before you go waving a gun around, pick out a casket so your mom won’t have to.

People are fed up, and they aren’t gonna take it anymore!

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

EVERYONE needs to start standing up to criminals and killing them whenever it is legally justified. Defending your life and property is NOT “vigilante justice.” It’s standing up for your basic rights as a human being.

You go ahead and sit, whimpering in the dark. People with backbones have had enough!

Hey Common…. use some of your VA entitlement check for a ride to the free doctor and get your meds adjusted.

  • SouthEastNC says:

meant “more expensive than hiring a Security Guard”, not “cheaper than”

  • 28472 says:

He’s living off of us tax payers , who actually work for a living.

  • not entitled says:

I do have children, two to be exact, but I don’t have to worry about them commiting ctime because they were not raised to be criminals. If you don’t have the parenting skills to keep from raising a criminal maybe you are as much a criminal as they are.

Put the criminals down before they have the chance to commit more crime. Stop breeding for the purpose of collecting a welfare check. How much you want to bet this won’t be the last time Jaquan Martin runs afoul of the law? Hopefully next time someone puts his criminal self down like the criminal dog he is.

  • guesty says:

If my child were dumb enough to think of armed robbery as a way of life, a quick fix or a way to make ends meet it would not only mean I failed as a parent but that he would get what he asked for. If that means he is shot and possibly killed, that would be the result of a hard life lesson.
I’d cry, I’d be sad and devastated but I wouldn’t try to defend his actions with all the BS that the criminal lovers try. That would mean he wasn’t a good boy, he would have hurt somebody and all his time in church didn’t sink in.

  • Commonsensenotcommontoday says:

    One’s a deputy sheriff, one’s a career army officer.

I doubt that either of them will be sticking up convenience stores any time soon, but if either does, then I’d highly recommend the store owner or clerk to shoot to kill VERY QUICKLY.

You MIGHT NOT BE AWARE OF WHAT MY FIRST THOUGHT TO YOUR COMMENT WAS TO SAY BUT I THOUGHT ABOUT SAYING “F’ YOU AND LEAVING IT AS THAT. BUT LIKE I SAID BEFORE EVERYONE HAS AN OPINION AND I KNEW THIS WHEN MY SON WENT OUT AN GOT CAUGHT UP IN THIS STUPID DECISION THAT HE OBVIOUSLY MADE ON A WHIM. I DIDN’T LOOK AT MY SON WHEN HE WAS BORN AND SAY. AWWWW, LOOK AT THE FUTURE CRIMINAL IN THE MAKING. I LOOKED AT MY SON WITH SAME EYES MOST PARENTS LOOK AT THEIR CHILDREN WITH. SUCH AS I HOPE I CAN TEACH HIM EVERYTHING IN WHICH HE WOULD NEED IN ORDER TO BECOME A STRONG, CARING, RESPECTFUL OF SELF AND OTHERS TYPE OF MAN, THAT WOULD ONE DAY GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL, GO OFF TO COLLEGE AND STRIVE FOR THE MOON AND THAT STARS. MY FAMILY AND I AREN’T ON WELFARE, DESPITE WHERE WE LIVE. I AM A FULL TIME COLLEGE STUDENT WITH COUNTLESS CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION ON MANY DIFFERENT SUBJECTS WHO IS AND WILL CONTINUE TO BE HERE FOR MY CHILDREN NO MATTER WHAT. GOOD OR BAD, CAUSE AS PARENTS WE KNOW THAT OUR CHILDREN ARE GONNA MESS UP, THEY WOULDN’T BE HUMAN IF THEY DIDN’T. IT IS STILL UP TO US TO EITHER THROW UP OUR HANDS AND SAY WELL, I DID THE BEST I COULD OR ATTEMPT TO BE THAT POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT THAT TELLS THEM ” HEY LOOK YOU KNOW THAT THE DECISIONS THAT YOU ARE MAKING IS VERY DETRIMENTAL TO YOUR FUTURE IN OUR SOCIETY, AND I KNOW YOU CAN DO BETTER!!!!!” I CHOOSE THE LATTER OF THE TWO CHOICES. MY SON ISN’T AN ANIMAL; ALTHOUGH IF HE ONLY HAS PEOPLE IN HIS LIFE WITH YOUR VIEWS I DEFINITELY BELIEVE HE COULD JUST AS EASILY MAKE YOU A BELIEVER. THANK GOD HE HAS ME. HAVE A GOOD DAY.
