WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — As we told you yesterday, New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger sent another scathing e-mail this week to fellow county leaders. Now some his colleagues are firing back.

“There is no way I’m going to back down short of losing in the court of law,” Berger said at this afternoon’s agenda briefing.

Berger plans to keep on fighting his removal from several community boards last month. In an e-mail this week, he demanded a legal explanation from the county.

“My removal from the DSS Board is certainly illegal,” Berger said.

But according to the county attorney and manager, nothing illegal happened.

Commissioner Jason Thompson said Berger’s e-mails to his fellow commissioners are just silly. He says there is no reason for Berger to keep asking the same thing over and over again.

“I’m tired of it,” Thompson said. “I’m going to say what I’ve been saying for the past year: quit making empty threats. Quit crying wolf when there’s no wolf.”

Thompson says unlike the other commissioners, who tend to ignore Berger’s e-mails, he wants to bring Berger’s issues out in the open.

“I think just publicly we need to have a big meeting and air it all out, and if you can prove something, prove it, and if you can’t, then shut up about it,” Thompson said.

But, like Berger, Thompson doesn’t seem to think this will end any time soon.

“No, I don’t think so from what I’ve seen so far, but that’s up to Commissioner Berger, but if he wants to end this he can,” Thompson said. “I mean, he’s heard the answer several times, but it is the answer, but you can’t keep asking because you don’t like what you hear.”

County commissioners have a regular meeting Monday at 9 a.m.

to Wall-mart lately? B. B. Seems to represent a large part of NHC pretty well to me.

  • Disgusted says:

Well perhaps his fellow Tea Party partner in incivility Thom Goolsby will get him out of all of his charges so NHC citizens can continue to suffer this embarrassment. Thanks Senator Goolsby, once again you’ve demonstrated your utter lack of judgment.

  • southernmomma says:

This guy is an idiot! He needs to go!!!He needs some counseling! This represents our county!Beger you need to go get some help and quit making a fool of yourself!

  • Guest2020 says:

How long until y’all can vote him out of office?

  • Peyton Garrett says:

I was just wondering in a brief conversation and wager with a friend, How long will it take for Him to throw a misguided tantrum. No newspaper coverage, no TV. Brian apparently runs over to Ben’s house, throws down a few, lets Ben author and edit his E-Mail and fires it off. It is so obvious. I think it is becoming a ruse for Ben McCoy. A game. Some way to try and screw with the board. He knows He can’t be elected to latrine duty and it is tearing Him up. Berger the poor dumb ass can’t even read a statement He says He wrote. Ben and Brian need to do a better job of coaching one another. By the way, I won the bet.

  • straightfact says:

Say what you will but most of these posts dont reflect facts. Innuendo is no substitute for reality! Berger has flaws but so do we all–particularly these other sanctimoneous commssioners. Unlike them he hasnt voted his self-interest. Unlike Thompson and Barfield, he hasnt threatened other public officals with physocal violence. Attacking Ben McCoy and Brian Berger doesnt cast aside the disgusting conduct of his fellow commissioners and some of their many self serving votes helping themselves and their friends. Wilmington’s politics are vulger—dont blame that on Mccoy and Berger.
Some of the attacks on those two are an effort to distract us from the culture of corruption existing here. Who needs Obama and Biden–we have Saffo and Davis and their cabal of mischief makers!

  • Berger Detector says:

That’s for tuning in Brain. I was wondering how long it would be before we saw one of your famous ranting, drivel filled posts. You forgot the cronyism and good old boys.

  • Peyton Garrett says:

OK Ben, You and Butt Boy Berger sniff some glue, have a few wine coolers, sit, write and edit Your next letter to the rest of the board. Try to do it by 3:00 AM though. Jason may not get it. For that matter, none of the others either. They all have jobs!!!!!

  • Guest24 says:

Fire all county commissioners, the idiotic mayor, and the useless city council. They are public parasites and welfare queen Louise McColl is a fat, slimy, cancer fleecing the public. McColl makes Al Sharpton look good.

  • disband the commissioners ! what a waste of space! says:

disband the commissioners ! what a waste of space!

disband the commissioners ! what a waste of space!

disband the commissioners ! what a waste of space!

disband the commissioners ! what a waste of space!

    all of them!

  • RSimmons says:

Is that a recent picture? Scraggly beard, wrinkled shirt with sloppy tie. He could at least show up looking professional.

  • AmyJ says:

Not that I’m a huge fan of Berger, however, I must say he looks better than his peer to the right of him. No jacket or tie at all. Rather a crooked one than not one at all – at least he made an effort to look professional. Don’t let any of them fool you. Lucky for the other commissioners, Berger has the “media headlights”, because if not, one of them would!

  • Namco Midway says:

Is he wearing a PAC-Man high score pin in his lapel???

  • Das Weibstück says:

“There is no way I’m going to back down short of losing in the court of law,”

LOL Good luck finding a FREE lawyer to help you in court seems you have no job, no house, car, brains.

  • Guest2020 says:

Can we throw Charles Warren in there? And maybe Columbus County would like to volunteer RC Soles. If not, I am sure that Leland would send Jane. I guess then we could really have a three-ring circus.

  • SurfCityTom says:

generate some revenue from this circus?

They could square off for 10 rounds and either resort to fisticuffs OR make it a real show with some WWE type moves.

You could likely get Ric Flair to come over from Charlotte to referree.

Set it for St Patrick’s Day and Berger can wear a leprechaun outfit.

  • Lukaplakia says:

Please find something else to do, so I can stop being embarrassed to say I live in Wilmington. Weepin’ Jesus on the cross.

  • Guest Lee says:

The difference is that Berger could dress up in tux with an ascot around his neck and a carnation in his lapel and he would still look like a slob. With some people, it just doesn’t get any better.

  • JoS. A. Banks says:

I won’t nominate Berger for the cover of GQ AmyJ just yet…maybe the cover of Homeless Monthly. For gosh sakes he looks like he slept in those clothes and hadn’t shaved in weeks. Let me asked you this? If you were an airport screener who would you pull to the side and search if Jason and Berger came through your line? The professional (ha, ha) in the tie or the guy in the polo shirt who looks like he can dress himself.
