Was Officer Gaughf going straight or turning left?

Here on WWAY it is being reporting today that Officer Gaughf was driving along when he was rear ended and pushed into the opposing lane. Another media outlet says he was slowing to turn left while yet another media outlet said he was beginning to turn left. I only bring that up because if officer Gaughf was stopped and waiting to turn left, his front wheels should have been pointed straight ahead to avoid being pushed into opposing traffic if rear-ended. If Officer Gaughf was waiting to turn left with his wheels turned to the left he may have unintentionally contributed to the severity of the accident. I'm not assigning blame to him but it is something many of us learned in drivers ed.

My best wishes to Officer Gaughf and Ms Cribb for a speedy recovery
My sincere condolences to Mr Kirkland's Family and Friends for their loss
