NAVASSA, NC (WWAY) — Leaders of Navassa realize they need to regroup and reunite to better serve their citizens. Town council members held a retreat Saturday with the Cape Fear Council of Governments to discuss their roles as leaders and to talk about some major issues facing the town.
In the past several years, Navassa has been investigated by the SBI and the IRS. Mayor Eulis Willis was arrested and charged with a DWI in July of last year. Willis says he knows the town and the leaders have a lot to work on, but says they need to be headed down the same road before they take any more steps.
“We’ve been in and out of the media with all kinds of petty arguments and all kinds of other things. The reason why is because we haven’t been on the same page and haven’t really been understanding where each other is going,” Willis said. “With this retreat, hopefully we can get some of that squared away.”
One of the big talking points at the retreat was the Navassa Police Department. Willis said the department makes up about 50 percent of the town’s budget. He said there is a lot to consider when thinking about restructuring.
“We need to talk about the possibility of combining with other departments,” Willis said. “We need to talk about whether we are going to get a new chief, whether we are going to add officers. What are we going to do for cars? We’ve got all kinds of issues with the police department that we need to look at.”
Willis said the retreat is the perfect time to regroup and discuss, but no definite plans about the department will be made at this time.
