Mexican cartels using small NC towns to traffic drugsWilmington certainly fits the bill for a cartel sub-hub. It has the obligatory major thoroughfare, I-40, which runs all the way to Barstow, CA, 2,500 miles away. Wilmington's Latinos constitute only around 6 percent of the city's population, but outlying counties like Cumberland, Sampson and Duplin have watched their Latino numbers skyrocket in the past two decades. Employment -- construction in the city and farming in the counties -- is the big draw. Lumbees are not cartels
Nah pretty sure you are referring to the Lumbee Indians. The Mexicans all left Eastern North Carolina when building construction halted a few years ago. They seemed to be more of a part of the 'cocaine cowboy' growth plan similar to Miami where all of the city high rise buildings were built with cocaine money during the late 80's and 90's.
