WRIGHTSVILLE BEACH, NC (WWAY) — It’s no secret that on Independence Day many locals and vacationers make their way to the beach. What may be surprising is how much businesses there rely on the influx of people.

The 4th of July at Wrightsville Beach means not only a crowded beach, but also crowded stores. Business owners we spoke with said it’s weeks like this that make all the difference.

“With the 4th falling on a Wednesday, we’re actually able to take advantage of both the early weekend and the late weekend, as well as the rush right in the middle. So business has been great,” King Neptune owner Danny McPherson said.

Not only do you want to go to the beach for the holidays, but many people at the beach want you there.

Businesses along Lumina Avenue say they rely heavily on Independence Day crowds.

“We have to hit it big for these months,” Original Ice Cream Stand owner Kane Anderson said. “June, July, August are huge months for us; July being the biggest. It kicks off pretty much with Memorial Day and July 4, with July 4 week being our busiest week.”

Anderson says he closes his store for four months out of the year, putting more pressure for them to get holiday numbers. He expects nearly 400 people to order ice cream from his stand on July 4.

“We have to hit a home run a lot of times to be prosperous, and we’re lucky that we are this year,” Anderson said.

Anderson has owned a business at Wrightsville Beach for a while, but McPherson is in his first year owning King Neptune. McPherson says he’s figured out pretty quickly how big Independence Day is for business.

“The numbers are good,” he said. “We can always improve, but we’ve been real satisfied with the amount of volume and traffic we’ve seen down here at the beach this week.”
