WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — New Hanover County Commissioner Brian Berger has been laying low. Other than appealing his violation of a protective order, Berger has been out of the news, until he sent an email to fellow commissioners around 2:40 a.m. The email expressed Berger’s disapproval of the board sending a letter of support for a head start grant.

Wednesday morning New Hanover County Commissioners woke up to another email from Berger filled with accusations of corruption and a lack of transparency.

Berger was responding to a request from New Hanover County Schools for a letter of support for a HeadStart grant. The school district is taking over the program after the federal government stripped it from New Hanover County Community Action because of management issues.

Berger did not seem to understand that, though, and accused fellow commissioners of making fraud and the endangerment of children “more accepted and fraud and abuse more insignificant in more areas.”

Commissioner Jason Thompson provided the clarification Berger needed, but he told us he’s tired of berger’s accusations, especially when he does not understand a situation.

We asked Berger about the late night email while he was on his way to court Wednesday in Brunswick County, especially about his accusations about corruption and transparency.

“That was not intended to be the implication,” Berger said, “and the email was not meant to be adversarial.”

Berger’s lawyer, Thom Goolsby, then ushered him into the courtroom, where he is appealing a protective order violation. A judge said Berger violated the order when he went to a meeting at New Hanover County Community Action, where his ex-girlfriend works. That appeal moved to brunswick county because of a change of venue request. Jury selection and opening statements began today.

    Dear Mr. Berger,

There’s no point in re-explaining to you at his time how irrational and disruptive you been. I’m sure, while you’re sitting up at 2:30 in the morning wrestling with your personal demons that even you’re aware of how much time has been wasted on you by the voters of New Hanover County.

As one of my elected officials, I wonder if it wouldn’t be too much of an imposition to ask two small requests of you.

(1)In your remaining time in office, could you just do your best to at least fly low enough below the radar to not get in the way of New Hanover County’s business?
(2)When the time finally comes (Tock!) for you to step down from office and hopefully disappear, would you please leave just as silently as possible? No farewell speeches, no rants, just go. Don’t even worry about closing the door behind you; we’ll be happy to do it for you.

Please consider these requests as an opportunity for yourself to have at least done something of a positive nature, no matter how small, during your tenure as a NHC Commissioner.

Thanking you in advance for your cooperation,
    Your unfortunate constituent,

I find it, curiously, interesting that Commissioner Berger trusted, Wilmington, citizens to elect him to office but he does not have that same trust for the same citizens to sit in judgement of him.

  • Guestmmmmmmmmmmmmm says:

Can wway post the full email in the story??

  • N/a says:

She was not at the meeting so your theory is wrong.

  • Berger Fan says:

His X Girlfriend did not work there. She works FOR the firm but only attended an event she never goes to but because the entire NHC Commission was scheduled to attend the meeting – including Mr Berger – she arrived. This forced a violation of a flawed protective order on Berger.

  • RPrice says:

Is there not more worthy news? Obviously this has nothing productive for our county. There is nothing that can be gained from this story. Where is the email and the investigative reporting that would show some merit or lack there of. Not just a phone call to someone? More he said she said nonsense. Blah news smooshews……

  • 1981duke says:

Davis and Catlin are leaving, trying for higher offices,is Mr.Berger right for standing up for what he believes?

  • Peyton Garrett says:

Not if what he believes is baseless and delusional. If he has proof of corruption among the board, display it or drop it. He was way off base in this matter. Uninformed or whatever you wish to call it. He continues this behavior and he often does it when his back is against the wall. He feeds off of getting his name in the paper or on broadcast news. Staying up all night firing off e’mails filled with inuendo may be the reason he can’t get to meetings on time. He needs to put up or shut up, do the research he should be doing before he speaks and perform due diligence in his duties but we all know that is a mission in futility.

  • Missy says:

If Berger had a brain, I swear, he’d take it out and play with it!

  • ken says:

It is often said, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” but you can certainly punish him for trying to pull the same old tricks that don’t fool anyone, least of all, the Judge.

  • southernmomma says:

It is time for this guy to go!It is obvious that he has some problems. How he ever got this job amazes me!He needs to get some help!He has issues!

  • Guest111 says:

If he is found guilty of the protective order violation is this enough to get him off the board?

  • taxpayer says:

    Unfortunately…no it isn’t.

  • Get Rid of this Clown! says:

Berger is obviously unstable and an embarrassment to the city. Why are we still wasting time and news on this clown?

  • Guest1234 says:

The reason he is objecting the grant for Head Start might have something to do with his ex-girlfriend being a teacher for them! Hmmm… how did he get elected?!?!

  • Peyton Garrett says:

Berger goes spouting off again. He never provides any proof of corruption amongst the other commissioners because there is none. In his insomnia induced state of delusion, he fires off baseless E-Mails that have no merit. The next day he shrugs and does a 180 trying to explain that they were not intended to imply what they said. Funny, that is how he does everything. In other words, never take what he writes or says to heart. It is not what he was implying.
