Not exactly

My son was diagnosed type1 at age 3, 10 years ago. While it is true that there are no Pediatric Endos in town, there are several endos who will take kids. Insulin/Pump therapy does not require constant trips to Duke, and any Dr. can write the prescription really, they just decline to for the liability, and because DM is poorly understood. What makes DM difficult is that each patient is different, and even each day can bring different results for each patient. In effect, you have to be your own Dr. most of the time. Quarterly and yearly tests can be performed by any Dr. really, and in most cases, by the time there is any longterm damage to treat, you won't need a pediatrician anyway. I'm sure if you are poor or un-insured, things are more difficult, but for the day to day, we are all on own own anyway.
