Sheriff Hewett
We told you earlier about the allegations surrounding the suspension of Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewitt. As you might imagine, our viewers have some interesting opinions on the subject. They posted some of them today here on wwaytv3.com. This is a modern day witchSubmitted by WITCH HUNT IN BRUNSWICK (not verified) on 2 April 2008 - 6:52am.
This is a modern day witch hunt. When the crime rate starts going up in Brunswick County, all the northern politicians that relocated to our county and want you removed from office will be begging you to take your job back. If the Federal Grand JURY investigated every sheriffs dept in the state they would find at least one or two problems. But that doesnt make them a criminal.Hang in there Ron and remember ''ITS NOT HOW MANY TIMES YOU GET KNOCKED DOWN, ITS HOW MANY TIMES YOU GET BACK UP''. I think that Sheriff Hewett is a good person...when I see him or have been in contact with him. Yes, the things he did were ABSOLUTELY WRONG...and he deserves punishment. Thank god,he deserves itSubmitted by flounder (not verified) on 31 March 2008 - 11:07pm.
Thank god,he deserves it being that he has more money now since how he takes the drug money that is to go in to the school system and puts it into his on pocket and has a $250,000.00 home on a county sheriffs pay Yeah right do the math he is guilty as sin. Ron's $250,000 homeSubmitted by Guest101 (not verified) on 6 April 2008 - 2:12pm.
Yeah; there's nothing quite like one of these Brunswick County $250K homes. In fact I live in one. I bought it at $40K in '82, AND it still looks like it's worth no more than the $40K I paid for it back then!!! BUT according to the BRUNSWICK COUNTY tax books, it is a $250K home NOW. Perhaps someone needs to investigate the revenooers. you do the math...Submitted by Getrealgal (not verified) on 1 April 2008 - 2:22pm.
First of all, let me say, I AM NOT A SUPPORTER OR FAN OF RONALD HEWETT. Secondly, let me say that I feel he has done wrong. However, you do the math... He and his wife BOTH work, and I believe he makes around 75,000 per year. I have no ideal how much his wife makes working at ATMC. Even if it is $40,000 per year, that would be $115,000 per year OR $9,583.00 per month. A 30 year mortgage on a $250,000 home at 6.5% interest rate would be $1,580. I believe this home is well within his means. If they are making $9500 a month, I believe they can afford a $1,500 a month mortgage!! Come on now...before you post stupid comments, you do the math! I wonder how many people have jobs that they are never off duty? I wonder how many people throwing stones at this man have had a few drinks in their own home after they are off work? Ron Hewett should not be judged for what he chooses to do on his own time, in his own home. He can not help that crime does not rest and his deputies call him, even when he is off duty. Is he never allowed to have off time, to have a drink if he pleases? How many people passing judgement on this man are willing to never have a drink on their off time again because it might be considered inappropriate for their job. I wonder if the members of the media have drinks on their time off? This is just a witch hunt, someone wants him out and they've rallied others in their quest. And our district attorney, please! I guess there are no skeletons in his closet. I wonder what a PI could dig up if he looked long enough? I think everyone throwing stones out there should look at themselves first and follow the most respected speaker of all times recommendation of, "Those without sin throw the first stone". I am just dumbfounded at some of these comments.... Hewett set himself to a higher standard the moment he became an officer. His job is to LEAD BY EXAMPLE!!! As a citizen of this county I am appalled that so many are defending him. If I had commited these same acts, I would be in jail. He shouldn't be treated any differently. In fact, he should be more accountable. Our safety was in His hands. Our children looked up to him. Do I want my son to be like Ron? NO!! The disrespectful terms he used, drinking, total lack of self-control? Poor judgement? No. We can do much better in Brunswick County. My father was a property manager for 2 apartment complexes in Wilmington in the 70's and 80's. He used to tell me about deputies under Sheriff H.G. Groman and the Sheriff's that followed him who would come to search apartments and durring their search the would pocket cash, jewelry, and any other small valuble they might find. Corruption in law enforcment is nothing new and it seems to be getting worse instead of better. Dishonest officers and deputies make it impossible for for the honest ones to do their jobs and criminals get away in the process. They should fry Ron Hewett's ass just like they did Wilmington native Mike Nifong when he tried to screw the Duke lacross players. Send the message just because you have a badge and an office you are not above the law. could not agree with you more.Submitted by Gene (not verified) on 31 March 2008 - 6:40pm.
My heart goes out to the honest law enforcement officers who work so hard and lay their life on the line for us citizens 24/7. A bad apple comes along and it puts a cloud of doubt and suspicion over them all. It is not fair but these good men and women in uniform have to live with that every day. In the Hewett case, a strong message needs to be sent that there is a zero tolerance for breaking the law by law enforcement! This is not only good for the citizens but it is good for honest law enforcement officers. At the same time the powers to be at the state, county, and/or municipal levels that turn a blind eye to corruption need to be removed also! Hewett Reminder of the 70'sSubmitted by John (not verified) on 31 March 2008 - 11:36am.
Well, here the County goes again! Another sheriff caught with his hand in the cookie jar again. Takes us back to the 70's and a former sheriff who had a very profitable sideline business using his personnel for guarding the coast for his drug running business. How familiar!!! Free Paul Pelham or reduce his timeSubmitted by Veronica (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 11:23pm.
God is good!!! What goes up must come down. Considering the situation at hand, now is the time to revisit the Paul Pelham situation. Remember the black male that got shot 17 times by the Brunswick County sheriffs's dept.? Some of the same deputies whose names i.e. Steven Lanier Mickey Smith, Caison are listed on the affidavit are the ones who are part of the SWAT team that shot at Paul Pelham over 60 times on Oct.5th, 2001. So if Ronald Hewitt and his deputies are crooked now they were crooked then. Perhaps since the deputies and his staff/deputies claim to be intimidated by Hewitt then it is possible to have lied 7 years ago about what really happened on the night of Oct. 5, 2001 on Van Galloway Trl.What is done in the night will come to the light!! Husband, father, brother and sonSubmitted by gene (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 9:12pm.
The crudeness of Mr Hewett should be appalling to any husband, father, or brother of a lady. While supporters are taking a stand on what a good man Mr. Hewett is I ask, do you accept as OK your wife, daughter, or sister having to be subjected to remarks about their "puppies"? Would you refer to your wife's breast to another man as, "basset hounds"? Humorous? Want to laugh? What if it was your wife, your daughter, or your sister? What if it were your mother? Humorous now? I think not. These comments are by law, illegal. By any reasonable standard, they are crude. I think Hewett has a daughter. Does he want any of us to comment on her puppies? I think not! Shame on you Ronald Hewett, you are not in the least, a southern gentleman. You are a hypocrite! I was raised as I am sure you were to know right from wrong. You, however, chose crudeness! How embarrassing to your good parents that taught you better and then you ignored! Roanald HewettSubmitted by ladydi on 30 March 2008 - 5:39pm.
this is not the first time he has done wrong , he was commiting crimes before he became sheriff. I personally know of a federal crime he committed in 1986 that he was never charged with along with Pete Moore. Kidnapping is a crime for most but not for him , he was doing his job, right . My life was changed forever, and you cant turn back time , but maybe now he will get the justice he deserves. Believe I will be following this case closely. Lets all hope he doesn"t get out of this one too. More audio recordings on Myrtlebeachonline.comSubmitted by brunswick resident (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 4:33pm.

I strongly feel that Mr. Hewett is not perfect but, since he is an elected official... that it should be taken to the polls and let the citizens decide on the future of Sheriff Hewett. Sheriff Hewett has done alot for our county. Look at Leland for example. That place was a dump and no decent people would live there 10 years ago. Now it is nice and thriving. Once know as a drug haven it is cleaned up now! He is a good man with strong ties to our county. He needs our support now and we need to support him. Some of his closest friends have done the unthinkable! We as citizens of this County need to step up and really think about what Sheriff Hewett has done for us and our county. Alot of new citizens do not know what it was like prior to Sheriff Hewett I will tell you it was a slum. Drugs everywhere! So you need to thank him for turning it around! Granted it was not done by just him but he spearheaded the progress. He loves Brunswick county and it is time for us to support our own! Take a look around withoutSubmitted by Guest24 (not verified) on 1 April 2008 - 1:43pm.
Take a look around without your pro Hewett blinders on and you will find it hard not to see that DRUGS are STILL everywhere in this county. And a wise person once said, majority of people will never remember what you have done right, they will remember what you do wrong first. In the end integrity is the focus here, knowing what he had done, because he was the one doing it, he should have gracefully stepped down. He should have thought of the county he "loves" so much and done the citizens of Brunswick Co. some real justice, and walked away. The fact that he knew what was coming and still clung to his office just shows he does not care about the county, he is merely out for himself. sheriff ronSubmitted by Rich (not verified) on 31 March 2008 - 4:05pm.

Sure sounds to me like Sheriff Hewett stepped on a lot of toes, starting with all the drug busts. I'm reserving judgement until ALL of the facts are out since i think Sheriff Hewett is a fine man and a brave one too. I remember another couple of county officials some years ago who served time for drug smuggling. I know a lot of people who hid their heads in the sand in 1983 when we had several law enforcement officers sent to prison. No one could believe it was happening, but it did. As a victim of a violent crime I can tell you how your perfect sheriff works. He sees me in public and ask if he can do anything to help me. I tell him what I need repeatly and he never acts on it. I call his office and he will not take my call. Ronald Hewett is a politican and nothing else. He does what makes him look good in public and does nothig for you at all. Other than knowledge of how he treat victims of crime I can't commit on him. I am aware that at one time he was a wonderful officer and person, but he changed. It is indeed a sad time for our county and for law enforcement, but instead of cheering on the sheriff how about thanking the officers that were brave enough to take a stand against wrong. Oh, and by all means, lets thank our District Attorney, Rex Gore, who refused to put his head in the sand. Are you deaf. Are you deaf. Listen to the recordings of your fine sheriff. Does he sound innocent to YOU? I think this is ridiclious!Submitted by OKI GIRL (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 1:00pm.
I think this is ridiclious! All that this is kicking someone while they are already down! I have known Mr. Hewett since I was a child and I have to honestlly say that is is a decent man. Of course did he make some mistakes? Yes. Everyone on here has! I think he did the best he could do. As far as him being drunk what he does on his own time is his business which is true for everyone. It is a shame that his officers had no LOYALTY or RESPECT. They decieved him with the lowest thing they could of done to him which was betray his friendship! If I am not mistaken is it not illegal to record somone with out thier consent? I do not believe that the recordings will be admissable in court. For all of the drug activity in this County you can not place blame on the Sheriff. He did his part to arrest the indivuals it is our court system who releases them with no consuquences. I am sure that the officers who "narked" on him felt like they were earning brownie points for community service. Ask yourself this why would they do this now? I am sure that they have deeds they are trying to cover up! Some of these deputy's have been with the Dept. for years they need to be let go also if Sheriff Hewett is. They are just as guilty as he is! Not only that, did any of them try to talk to him about thier concerns? Probably not because they were in on it. Now when a Federal inveatigation looks in to Brunswick County you see Deputy's running scared and turning on one another. This is not the type of people I want running my County! I say if Sheriff Hewett goes then there needs to be an overhaul at the Sheriffs Dept. because he was not alone! Laws are written by lawyers and politicians in such a way that only lawyers and judges can interpret them, so they can keep the power and control over we the people. Number 1 OKI Girl, it is not illegal to record someone as long as one of the parties involved in this case the recorder is aware of it. This should be allowed in court. Secondly, the deputies "serve at the pleasure of the Sheriff" this means that if the Sheriff doesn't like the way you look at him, YOU ARE GONE! no ifs, ands or buts. GONE! It took a lot of courage and I mean courage with a capital C to take a collective stand and do the right thing. You must either be related to or intimately connected to Mr. Hewitt. Yes, by the constitution the fourteenth amendment we are afforded the right of "Due process" and by the deputies taking a stand they are protected by the "whistle blower act". He will be able to stand before his accusers. He will have representation, the courageous deputies that stepped up to the plate do not have the same given to them as in the fourteenth amendment. In answering your question "why do this now?" how would you like to ruled in YOUR job by intimidation and fear? That is what they were subjected to. He put on a great front in the public eye, and literally sat up the media to make his grand entrance in such a manner that made him in his mind top Elliot Ness. You within your right mind do not pay while on the clock with tax payers money deputies to clean and repair campaign signs and make them contribute monies to your re-election fund, landscape, move, buy alcohol or order them to attend functions on their time off. Not to mention what was he thinking in giving his son a badge and county sheriff's dept. vehicle to while he was underage? All of these things were done under fear and intimidation of losing their jobs if they did not comply. It is very difficult to get everyone playing on the same team by "narcing" on him to not only walk the walk, but talk the talk. This is America and you have the right to believe what you believe, and state an opinion freely and openly without repercussions, they did not. You need to do some homework on the statistics of the turn-over rate. Everytime someone got fired they had to be replaced with another for lack of a better term "whipping boy", which I might add is costly to train. This self-righteous little man has cost us a bundle in man-power and with the potential liability of monumental proportions. So, while you have your "little I love Ronald affair" going on think about what I just stated because this is the tip of the ice burg. And I quite frankly do not want this potential walking liability representing this County. Whistle-BlowersSubmitted by Tara Burned Down (not verified) on 4 April 2008 - 5:59pm.
It is also a fact that no legislation can protect them from the consequences of their own actions...the scorn of the community, the distrust of law enforcement generated by their actions, ostracism by anyone with real standards and morals, and perhaps a skeleton or two falling out of their closets. I personally could bring charges of neglect of duty and willful obstruction against one of them. He is an insult to his uniform and never should have been hired to begin with. You seem to know a lot...so tell us Ms. Dryer, how can those tapes be evidence in court and at the same time aired on every major media outlet? How can he get a fair trial when so many of the citizenry have been prejudiced by those excerpts published in the newspaper. I think it could sure help the Sheriff's case a lot if the charges had to be dismissed for lack of evidence. YOU TOOKSubmitted by cool hand loot (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 5:19pm.
You took the words right out of my mouth ! of course these deputies are not going to say anything wrong on these tapes they are the only ones that know it is being recorded . First of all you need to make sure that you can spell! It is Hewett not Hewitt. Secondly, who cares if he goes to a nudist beach if his wife does not care then why should you? Is it perhaps that you wish you could go to one? He has a personal life just like everyone else does. Who are you to dictate what he should and should not be doing? Hmm.... What is the big deal with him drinking? It could be worse. I never once saw him drunk in public. Have you?Even if he was was he on duty? How do you know that he has had his hand in with the drug dealers? Are you one? Do you have proof? The man that was shot was my uncle. At the time of the incident we knew that there was something very suspicious about the shooting. They came to the house without identifying themselves as officers and when he opened the door, they exchanged a few words and they began to shoot! The media & officers tried to make everyone think that he shot at them first, but he never shot the gun, it wasn't even loaded. Justice needs to be served. It is sad how officers of the law take advance of their power and use it against innocent citizens. AH HA! The rope has finely came to it's end. I first and foremost, would like to take the opportunity to thank you BCSD deputies who took the couragous stance to police your own. This is your classic case of absolute power corrupts absolutely. I have stood back and watched the constant abuse of power that Sheriff Hewett wrought over his department and tried to with other departments (riding roughshod). I have wondered for many years how long this was going to go on. Here is your day in court Ronald Hewett, and you are so thin skinned you will not be able to take the heat. I hope people that are close to you will put you on suicide watch. I will pray for the BCSD in their safety. This whole affair has far reaching implications and we may never know the complete story (as this is very deeeply rooted). Ronald Hewett has crossed the thin blue line one time too many. Again, thank you BCSD deputies for your sense of honor and intregrity to the badge you wear and the Oath you repeated while your hand was placed on the Bible. You are my HEROS. For I too walk the thin blue line. A. Dryer Is All WetSubmitted by I C Red (not verified) on 4 April 2008 - 5:15pm.
I hope you aren't judged by the same measure you have judged him because as bitter and maladjusted as you sound, you're the one who should be on suicide watch. Ron Hewett also says on those notorious tapes where his "brave" deputies "led" him to say much of what he says that he has done NOTHING. He hasn't accepted bribes, has a mortage, and doesn't know the FOCUS of the G Jury investigation. These tapes document clearly for me the confusion and frustration he was experiencing. He states repeatedly his frustration that his employees won't return his calls and Kevin Holden tells him what he was told by the Grand Jury...listen again. So I guess we hear what we want to hear and I certainly want to believe in this man. He cleaned up this county and brought respect back to law enforcement which had previously been a sterotypical joke of corruption and greed. Before you gloat too loudly, better wait till he has his day in court. These tapes strongly suggest entrapment and you never know, he may have some surprising evidence himself that sheds new light on the questionable actions of these Judases. I am sorry that our sheriff has been put through all he has, but lets face it if you do wrong you get caught! I have worked with him from the time he started working in law enforcement and watched him through the years. That once nice young man changed as he became larger in the political field. He went from a nice young man to a camera hungry big headed adult. I believe in our judical system and that no matter how big you get you are not above the law. Thank you Mr. Gore and the deputies that came forward, a job well done. CorruptionSubmitted by gene (not verified) on 30 March 2008 - 9:34am.
The deputies that have come forward are courageous and are to be commended. Some people still do not understand that the high sheriff's in this country have the right to "fire at will", with no explanation or cause. These deputies have families and obligations just like the rest of us but not the many protections that many enjoy. When you work for a sheriff, you are acutely aware that YOU MAY BE FIRED ANY TIME IT SIMPLY PLEASES THAT SHERRIF! At the same time Ronald was ordering DWI checkpoints in one part of the county he was cruising to crime scenes in another part of the county intoxicated! While that is only one of the many, many allegations against him, that alone is cause for his removal. It seems the long arm of the law has reached in it's own pocket and is now going to clean that pocket out! Now it is time for the city of Boiling Spring Lakes to take a look at their own. According to news reports from Mt. Olive, NC, former Mt. Olive police chief and current BSL chief, Ballree was accused of using the Mt. Olive credit card to put gas in his son's personal vehicle. The same reports state that there is a video of that occurrence. Rather than face the allegations Ballree resigned, in disgrace. Now, he is a Chief again in BSL. How can this be? Further, while I have not witnessed it myself, several BSL residents claim to have seen Ballree driving his family in his police car. I guess the lesson here is, don't use the town credit card for fueling a personal vehicle, just use the town car for personal use! If the town leadership in BSL is going to turn a blind eye to this I hope the "free press" will look into it. The citizens of BSL, like the citizens of Brunswick County deserve more and better! Also, the citizens like the deputies have fears of reprisals if they come forward. Complaining to those that hired him just does not seem like a good option. It seems that wold just get you targeted! How about it WWAY, is this not worth looking in to. As long as there are unanswered questions there is a cloud over Chief Ballree and therefore the department, town, and citizens. The best scenario would be for Ballree to fully face the scrutiny of an impartial investigation. Then if he is exonerated it removes the cloud over his head and gives the BSL citizens cause for pride in him and the department. The lesser would be to find he is guilty of the allegations but with that find, the town could take the necessary steps to clean it up. The worst is to continue the blind eye and have the cloud of doubt forever hang over the city. Fire at willSubmitted by Southern Born (not verified) on 2 April 2008 - 9:31pm.
