Video of Officer Matthews's fatal car crash

READ MORE: Video of Officer Matthews's fatal car crash
matthews300.jpg
The video from the recently released dash cam of WPD Officer Richard Matthews’s patrol car shows how quickly things happened two weeks ago when his vehicle spun out of control. This is real time video as Matthews sped up on Shipyard to assist fellow officers in a drug chase. The box he tried to avoid comes up very quickly. He pulled hard to the left to avoid it and ended up in the trees. There is also video from an officer who was following shortly behind Matthews. She encounters the box and then turns left where she sees Officer Matthews’s car in the trees. These tapes will be part of the case prosecutors are building against the suspects in the case. The WPD released them now in response to a lawsuit filed by the Star News. Police Chief Ralph Evangelous sent a memo to department staff, and to the media. It reads, in part: "The Wilmington Police Department has a proven record of complying with requests for public information. We have gone above and beyond what the law requires by making incident and accident reports available online. We routinely release detailed information on high-profile incidents, sometimes even before local news organizations are aware that the incidents have occurred." "Ideally, the members of this Police Department would have more time to reach closure and begin the healing process before being subjected to constant replaying of videotapes from the events of February 18th. But we are releasing the tapes today to end the pointless controversy." WWAY received seven DVDs from the WPD. We chose to air a small fraction of the video available to us that we felt helped tell the story of Officer Matthews's response, and the events that led to his tragic death.

What does that have to do with the price of tea in china.

wow

You must be a really great Aunt.

Blame the Star News!

Blame the Star News for this one! You are bashing this media outlet when in fact the Star News filed suit. ALL local media stations showed the video including your 14. Should it have been shown? I am not to judge... It would have been shown sooner than later.. But the StarnzaiNews had to get it out first at any cost. In so many cases the Star News has disgraced our commubnity by being an overly-opinionated paper, printing mis-truths and not facts. I can read the news online and would never think about giving the Red paper a dime.

Sorry about the loss but public records are public records. Stop

I too, am so sorry about his death, but public records are public records. Stop the blame game. A good man was lost in the line of duty and your outspoken resentment is over-shadowing his good name. No court sealed the record thus being a LEC officer it was public. And news media outlet or even yourself could request the video. If anything, I thought that the video showed a heroic young man, serving our city, making us proud citizens and having a horrific accident. It did not disgrace the officer by showing footage from EMS removing the officer from the car, it did not focus on the negative. YOU sir, albiet upset and heartbroken by your friend's death as well as the rest of the city, have posted a very immature commentary labeling yourself as his best friend and thus showering heroics with negativity and that is a shame in itself as you have dishonored a good man's memory and legacy by doing so.

Where is video from Star News NOW??!?

Heard through the grapevine that a large Star News truck was involved in an accident early this morning. I've checked the Star News website several times, as well as other local media websites such as this one. Oddly enough, I haven't seen any video of that footage. I haven't even seen any mention of it in the form of a story! Come on, Star News, step up. You DEMANDED under threat of lawsuit that WPD release their footage. The very LEAST you can do now is provide footage in the form of video (preferably) or photography. Because this story is indeed news, why isn't even a paragraph about this incident on your webpage? All the other media outlets are guilty too because they all showed the footage obtained by the Star News' mafia tactics. Why aren't other media agencies demanding information about this incident? One word comes to mind...hypocrite.

Hmmmm....

Okay...by your logic, ANYONE that dies on video is fair game when it comes to whether or not the public should view it. The pedifile that tapes himself murdering a child...the Somalians who desecrated the corpse of our American soldier in Somalia...all fair game and thus acceptable to you.... You sicken me. I don't claim that it disgraced Officer Matthews to show the footage. I DO, however, claim that it was utterly tasteless and unnecessary to demand it for viewing and then air it. Did watching it change ANY fact about what we know happened that horrific night? No. We saw him responding to another officer's call for help. We saw him swerve...we saw his vehicle cross the median, and we saw his vehicle in the tree...does ANY of that make him less dead and therefore make this event less tragic? Exactly WHAT was gained by watching it?? I beg to differ with your claim that the video footage did not focus on the negative. IT SHOWED EVERY SECOND LEADING UP TO AND INCLUDING HIS DEATH. How in the name of God is that NOT negative??!? Regarding your stupid comments that another poster in this forum dishonored a good man's memory and legacy...I truly do not understand where you are coming from. Being outraged over something THIS private being FORCIBLY made THIS public is NOT the same thing as dishonoring Officer Matthews' legacy and memory. A sense of outrage over this footage being demanded and aired is about the media going WAY the heck too far for nothing more than ratings. Why? Again...NOTHING new was learned by this footage being aired. Yeah, I'll agree with you that public records are just that: Public. However, just because you CAN do something does NOT mean you SHOULD do it.

Leo442 How dare you!!!!! to

Leo442 How dare you!!!!! to say I am dishonoring my friend. You do not know the first thing about this situation! you think that this footage was nessecary??? WOW are you sick! Oh let me see, what part did you find necessary sir, the part where my friends patrol car is stuck in the trees or maybe the chilling phone call from the other polce officer oh i know you must mean the footage when all the police officers are leaving the scene because they realize THEY CANNOT GET HIM OUT THE CAR TILL EMS ARRIVE!!!!!! HMMMMMMMMM seems to me you should crawl rightback under that rock of yours and stay there! Also pray for yourself that you never have to go through something like this! No need to respond back, you are uneducated and sick! There, you were just labeled!

The Chief of Police said he

The Chief of Police said he would hand over the tape but he wanted to wait to give the friends and family members a chance to grieve. It wasn't like he said he wouldn't turn over the video ever. Sorry, but this was just tasteless media as far as I'm concerned.

The Bright side

At least Officer Matthews didn't kill any innocent bystanders when he crashed. This chase should not have happened and the chase policies should be revised. The video helps us see this, so I encourage one and all to watch it.

I did watch the video, like

I did watch the video, like others I was curious. But nowhere and at no point did I look at the video and think to myself that this is a good reason to stop the pursuit or revise the pursuit policy. Let's not turn this around and put the blame on LEO...the only fault here lies with the suspects that brought on the chase

No

The fact that someone could have been coming the other way means the chase was inadvisable. Let Officer Matthews and other innocent bystanders live to fight petty crime another day. Bad policy in action.

good policy???

don't chase them. get ahead of them, when they get to the officers waiting, riddle them with bullets i will gladly pay for the weapon untill that policy is enacted you keep chasing them, for, it may be my family that needs you and i don't want some "save the criminal" treehugger making you second guess yourself also, every human being makes a mistake, i'm sure that the people that are on the side of the criminals have never made any. you guys (police officers) keep up the good work. and i hope that you don't ever have to rescue me , and if you do, please run a few red lights

Well, with that logic there

Well, with that logic there is NEVER a good reason for police to chase...that bad guy just shot 5 people in a bank robbery but we shouldn't chase him because an innocent bystander might get killed! Yeah, that's a great reason. Some people just aren't that smart are you

That's right, WilmMan!

What's wrong with you, WilmMan? Of course all ambulances, police & fire trucks should come to a full & complete stop at every stop sign, never go over the speed limit and wait patiently at red lights (like all the other Wilmington motorists do). Oh, and I've seen PLENTY of them trying to pass cars IN THE CENTER TURN LANE!! Can you believe how those first responders disregard laws? Just to respond to some stupid cry for help... And I'm sure they have absolutely NO specialized emergency driver training, either. (note the sarcasm...)

I think

I think wilmman was agreeing with you that the chases should not stop. He just didn't notate the sarcasm.

Agreeing with WilmMan

Just setting the record straight that I caught his note of sarcasm! I'm just never sure how things sound to people on these message boards so I wanted him to know that I was also.

well, well, well. bravo, you

well, well, well. bravo, you got your video! Are you proud? Do you feel better that you aired my best friends death all over the news. There are no words to describe how I feel right now. You all better pray that NO one in the Matthews family sees this HORRIFIC video!!!!!! Because if they do YOU the devil in disquise will have the LAWSUIT on your nasty nasty filthy rotten hands!!!!!!!!!!!!! What a bunch of LOWLIVES YOU PEOPLE TRULY ARE! What goes around comes around!, dont forget it

I am so sorry for the loss

I am so sorry for the loss of Officer Matthews. It's a shame that the media in this area have a lack of respect for what his family, friends and co-workers are going through right now. There are a lot of us in the community that are truly disgusted as well. The fact is, the Star News and the other media outlets really don't care about the community; they care about sensationalism. It's been that way for a long time now. I was less suprised by the Star News. I wish that WWAY had been the one station to make a stand to say "we are going to be sensitive to the family and friends of Officer Matthews at this time". I appreciate their editing, but they still could have refused to air it. It would have been the right thing to do. I don't think there is anything the family can sue for. Wish there were.

Officer Matthews

God bless you Officer Matthews. Thank you for your service and ultimate sacrifice to keep us all safe. Rest in peace, Brother...

I didn't watch it. But it

I didn't watch it. But it should be out there. It is not entertainment. Think of how important this is. No matter who you are if you had questions then this should answer them. Think about the video and what you are seeing.

This has nothing to do

This has nothing to do with public property or the public has a right to know... the news companies that persued this video are also very good at writing! So write about it to your hearts content for all i care, no one is saying you can't tell the public what happened. However, forcing people to release a video such as this one is definitely crossing the line. I know everyone here wouldn't want to watch their own family be killed over and over on television or on the internet. No amount of editing is going to make the release of this video "OK" either. Further more, this video (with how it is edited) has completely lost its necessity as an "Explanation for the Public" (if the public even has a right to an explanation), because the only parts of the video that are displayed, could be easily expressed through a text article. I personally am disappointed with the moral values of our society as a whole if I am hearing comments like "The public has a right to know" and "This is public property!". You need to mind your own business!... Where were these you when Officer Matthews was racing his way to respond to a call? I didn't see you on this video, out of your homes at 1 am on a Wednesday morning protecting the community! Every single one of you needs to think about that!

This Not Neded

Shame on WWAY for making this public.

This not needed by WWAY

WWAY saved my life and informed me about my daughter's murder from 9-5-2006 and my identical twin sister and hundreds of families and friends now have closure and we ALL in HUNTSVILLE, AL appreciate WWAY with all our hearts for giving us from day-to-day what happened. Carla Lea Painter Bussard has three children Joey Josh and Aerial who are greatful for WAAY having a picture of their Mother which they share together on myspace. I am getting more closure since I was told yesterday about them knowing each other just because of WAAY. GOD BLESS you all.

What the hell does that have

What the hell does that have to do with the situation at hand. God bless WWAY, how bout god bless you madam. God bless the united states? God bless the creation of the easy-bake oven for serving me such great bowl movements. This video is sick, would you have liked to see the murders of your family members aired for everyone to see? Hm? If that happened, then you might begin to see where these fellow officers are coming from. God bless the people who have given there lives to make things safe for all of us. They are part of the only profession that suffers bigotry on a daily basis just because of there uniform. Most are former military and have fought for our COUNTRY and you GOD GIVEN right to express yourself. I say we all get together and find a way to stop the airing of this video and help give closer to another family just like yours. I'm not a cop, just a man that appreciates the fact that without them and their selfless community services, we would be in anarchy and much, MUCH worse. Protect the order, treat them as what they are, human.

That's why we serve

I am a Viet nam combat veteran, who retired from law enforcement in Camden New Jersey. I also know how it feel to lose friends while they performed thier duties. In this case there is no right or wrong as public servants who have to hold ourselves to a higher standard than most. every thing e do either right or wrong is in the veiw of the public. I am soory that an officer dead while performing his dutiesand we all can say if this or that had not happen, but that is how it goes. We serve because we believe the things we do for others will make a difference and maybe someone will thank you.

WPD Crash

I am a local LEO. First off, let me point out a couple of things..... Did I watch the video.......yes. Why...........much like everyone else, curiosity ......Would I want my family to see the my last views and what led up to it should I be involved in something similar....NO. Definately in bad taste on all involved. Star News for the law suit, and WWAY and WECT for also joining the bandwagon. But like others have said..don't watch it if you don't want to, but I believe most that are complaining have watched it. It's human nature, just like when any other major catastrophe occurs and they show it on TV. But, can you really blame the media for wanting the videos. Do they always do what's in the best interest of those involved. NO. Can you live without them. NO, but that's why I watch WRAL.

What a FOOL!!!

So...Whay are you on WWAY website then!?!?! You really sound foolish!
