WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- Election Day is a month away. Each Tuesday this month, we'll begin a series of profiles on candidates in the some of the big races in our area.

The race for two spots on the New Hanover County Commission brings forward four candidates. One of those candidates is engineer and businessman Rick Catlin.

"I live here, and I want to make a difference," Catlin said about why he is running for commissioner.

Catlin is a man of many titles: family man, owner of Catlin Engineers and Scientists. The candidate for New Hanover County Commission says being a public servant will be nothing new for him.

"I've been chairman of the Ports, Waterways and Beach Commission, which builds infrastructure for jobs and keeps our beaches sandy and our storm berms in place and our waterways open and our harbors viable," Catlin said.

Catlin is also on the state Health Commission. The 30-year resident of New Hanover County says his time on these commissions gives him the right experience and mindset to tackle what he thinks are key issues for a better New Hanover County.

"I think that now is an important time to have leadership as we try to balance our economy, environment and our quality of life in this special place we live," Catlin said.

In his spare time Catlin enjoys spending time with his wife Janice and their two grown children Jason and Kristi. Catlin says family is a major reason why he's running for commissioner. If elected he hopes to leave the county a better place for those who will live here for years to come.

As for the race itself, Catlin says it's going well. He hopes the positive pace will continue and help him win one of two open spots on the New Hanover County Commission

"It's time that we've made it where business people are willing to take some time away from their daily activities and perform some community service as an elected official and not just politicians," he said.

Coming up this week, we'll profile the other candidates for New Hanover County Commission. Wednesday we'll meet Deborah Butler.

Catlin is the ONLY one for the job!

Rick Catlin is the only experienced man for the job. He doesn't have a thing to hide and if you have questions, ask him at one of his many meet and greets!

Say it aint so

Notice how with all the smears at another candidate-we still dont have answers to a question that really matters--say it aint so Rick?

why answer

Smear and fear good ole boys out for Catlin and Sid who never saw an ethics rule he needed to abide by--or Catlin who has played along to get along. We have mediocrity with Thompson now, it would get even worse with these guys-catlin and sid.
Instead of their hatchet men smearing others -maybe they can answer some questions about theri own play along get along
serious conflicts.
Either way if they win --we all lose
and if they lose ---we all win
Butler and Berger are better by comparison

you are so right

TWO good ole boys--Catlin who wont answer the questions-say it aint so Rick beecause he has gone along with Caster, Thompson and the others--he had a clear conflict so why answer. As for Causey he has no substance and a terrible record.
Brian Berger and Deb Butler are far better choices-new ideas-new people---much better for County and for all of us

Digging into the past

I have started looking into each local candidates past.

I have liked Catlin, but if I find him on the side of Caster and Thompson he will loss my vote.
The people of New Hanover County can't take anymore taxes or rate increases. We are being taxed out of the county. The water company has to be stopped.
I know that I am just 1 vote, but I am not alone with this feeling.

Stop taxing us to death, we can't take it any longer!!!!!

yes

As your research will show he did side with caster and thompson. Good on some experience but poor on issues- i guess I would do just what you said--look at issues that matter to you and then decide who to vote for-- I dont think this would be the person if taxes concern you.

WHY DOESNT CATLIN TELL THE TRUTH

Where are catlin's answers to questions on business dealings with County and State?

Ask him yourself, Brian!

Let's hear more about your past, Brian Berger!

Rick Catlin is a FAKE

Rick Catlin was an active partner of caster--and all that they stood for!
We still are waiting for Catlin to tell us how much business he does and has done with County and State----is that self interest?
Beyond that- I too remember the Caster and Catlin duo--and that pic on primary night in May-with the two of them. Catlin had years to take a stand on issues that supported the public interests and not special interests--and Catlin failed to do so. His agenda was to play along to get along--and we simply can't afford that any more.

Brian Berger Manipulated this post! AGAIN! Berger is THE FAKE!

BEWARE of Brian Berger's constant BASELESS attacks and rheroric he post on this blog mostly written by himself!

Say it aint so Rick-How much business with County?

I still haven't seen or heard Catlin at ant forum tell us how much business he does with County and State----is that self interest?
Beyond that- I too remember the Caster and Catlinduo--and that pic on primary night in May-with the two of them. I guess if we really want more of the Caster, Saffo, crowd--just play along to get along-catlin's our candidate---but for a change maybe this time we will vote for better. We have no one to blame but ourselves-if we dont want more of the same.

Catlin and Berger- a good duo

This year Republicans have much better candidates in Rick Catlin and Brian Berger---we need to turnout to defeat tax and spend Butler and tax and spend Causey===we dont need a pelosi and reid in the County.
Along with Goolsby these folks would be a big improvement over what we have now.

Berger & Catlin--good choices

I agree with earlier comments-very different but agreat pair-bringing diversity and better government.

our time to defeat local dems-LOCAL REPUBLICANS ARE BETTER

I AGREE WE HAVE A GOOD TEAM IN CATLIN-BERGER--DAWSON-GOOLSBY, KENNEDY AND THE OTHERS. WE NEED TO DEFEAT THE DEMS AND GOVERN OUR COUNTRY,STATE AND COUNTY WITH GOOD PEOPLE WHO WILL NOT WASTE OUR MONEY. WE CANT AFFORD THE KIND OF GOVERNMENT THE DEMS ARE FORCING ON US AND THEIR VERY LIBERAL IDEAS. PLEASE VOTE REPUBLICAN AND END THE POWER OF THESE OUT OF CONTROL DEMOCRATS

cant agree on catlin-go Deb

Claims he has lots of experience-sure does--played along to get along--still no answers on his conflicts with doing business with County and state. All the years he's been there and done nothing to oppose the good ole boys- we've had enough--go deb and brian

Say it aint so Rick

Remember the Republican primary--Caster and Catlin. Every one knows that Rick is a go along play along guy-is that really the kind of experience we want? Will he disclose if he has done business with the County--and, if so, how much. Rick has been part of the status quo--is that really what we want. Finally, as a Republican I have had a chance to see the gamesmenship he has displayed on the campaign trial- a bit like Spector, Murkowski and Crist.

say it aint so Rick

Could not agree more with earlier comment--Rick was proud to tell us of his lunch and closeness to Thompson and Caster. He has been part of the cronyism many of us object to. He has lived here along time--but he went along to get along ---he id not stand up for alternatives to taxes, CFPUA and on many other issues. We need a different map for County==rick would take us on same tired roads.
