GREENSBORO -- Voters in Greensboro have elected a political newcomer who pushed for more oversight over city finances.

Bill Knight, 70, an accountant, beat Democratic Mayor Yvonne Johnson by 964 votes out of 34,234 cast, according to final, unofficial results. Johnson served one two-year term.

Knight, a Republican, says four months ago no one in the North Carolina city knew his name. But he says voters wanted change.

During his campaign, he also pushed for better leadership in the police department.

A Tale of Two Candidiates

Two political newcomers both ironically named Knight (as in knight in shining armor) ran for Mayor in Greensboro and Wilmington NC.
Both wanted to hold down taxes and hold down crime. Both rose out of the party that has NOT controlled the state for over 150 years.
Most Wilmington residents decided not to participate in the election, so the same small faction did vote, and again decided their city's future.
Greensboro did the opposite. More residents decided to vote, and to try a another way.
Greensboro got out and cast their vote for a change.
Wilmington stayed home and got the same.
