RALEIGH, N.C. -- The U.S. Census Bureau estimates North Carolina's capital will outstrip the banking center atop the list of largest counties.

The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Wednesday the Census Bureau projects that Wake County will pass Mecklenburg County as the state's most populous in a few years if trends continue.

The Census Bureau released the estimated populations of every county and metropolitan area in the country as of last July. Wake County's population was estimated at just under 900,000, compared to 914,000 in Mecklenburg County. Wake is home to Raleigh. Mecklenburg County's seat is Charlotte.

North Carolina has six of the country's 100 fastest-growing counties. They are Union, Brunswick, Wake, Johnston, Hoke and Currituck.

The state's estimated population was almost 9.4 million, up 16 percent.
