Most people can agree, sometimes it's hard waking up in the morning and going to work. So why get up even earlier if you don't have to? But many do. Long before your alarm goes off, before you enjoy that first cup of coffee, a select group of people have already been up for hours. It's not a job or duty that pulls them from their zzzz's. It's the ocean, Mother Nature at her finest. That's one reason Patrick Smith wakes before dawn and heads to the beach. "The sunrise is very spiritual and it's just very nice in the mornings, there's no crowds," said Smith. On any given morning, any given day of the year, our waters are filled with men and women who enjoy the thrill of conquering a wave as it crests toward shore. It's a feeling of camaraderie -- of "family," and for some, getting up early to surf is really a family affair. Surfer Heath Magsig said, Just being able to bond with the kids, you know you can come out here anytime of the day you can find a wave. You might have to wait little longer than others but going to find something, just hanging out with the kids is the best time." Magsig surfs with his three children before he goes to work. The urge to start the day off catching a few waves seems to be in the blood. His kids hope to hit the beach before hitting the books once school starts. "They're already asking me the question if there's a way they can get up really early or even if they can miss a few days, a few hours of school beforehand. We'll see, we've got another week or so," said Magsig.
