Ways to keep safe during holiday shopping

READ MORE: Ways to keep safe during holiday shopping
With the holiday shopping season in full swing you need to be careful when you're hitting the stores. Police see an increased number of crimes this time of year, but there are things you can do to keep you and your stuff safe. Detective Craig Bredenbeck with the New Hanover County Sheriff's Office said crime can happen anytime, anywhere, so you have to be prepared. "It is not just at night anymore. It can be whenever, and you don't really know who is out there," said Bredenbeck. He suggests trying to hide your card information when at the ATM, in case people are looking over your shoulder. He also recommends keeping your keys in your hand, in case you need to hit the panic button or use them as self-defense. "I carry my keys with my keys between my two fingers so if somebody came at me I'd want to poke them in the eye," said shopper Jodi Adams. Other tips would be to keep your bags out of sight in your car and to carry mace or pepper spray, but make sure you can get to it easily and are comfortable using it.
