This weekend there are festivals galore, plus several ways you can feel good about yourself by helping others. If you love going to the beach and looking at the beautiful shells you will enjoy the 2008 North Carolina Shell Show. It is happening all weekend at the Cape Fear Museum. Shell enthusiasts will show off their finds, plus there will be shell photography and arts and crafts. It runs from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday. On Sunday, it is from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday night, Port City Eye Associates is holding a Mad Men Fall Fashion Show. They are holding the event to raise money for juvenile diabetes research. It takes place at the Balcony in downtown Wilmington. Tickets are $25 with the doors opening at 8:00 p.m. If you buy a $45 pass, you can get in an hour earlier. Just days after the start of fall, the New Castle Street Art and Antique District is holding its fall festival. During the festival, the two blocks that make up the art district will be turned into a street fair. Proceeds benefit the Ability Garden at the New Hanover County Arboretum. The festival runs from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday. Saturday, you can help with the Keep America Beautiful Big Sweep. From 8:30 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., volunteers are needed to clean near Johnny Mercer's Pier, the Boardwalk at Carolina Beach, the Kure Beach Pier and around Greenfield Lake. You can relive history Saturday at the North Carolina Battleship. Living history interpreters will show the life of the battleship crew during World War II. This event runs from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. Join thousands of seafood lovers Saturday and Sunday during the 45th Annual NC Spot Festival. The festival starts at 9:45 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday morning. Several bands will play throughout the day while you chow down. The festival ends at 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. On Saturday, you can also find the 2nd Annual Stroll-a-thon, an event to raise money for Rett Syndrome research. Rett Syndrome is the leading genetic cause of severe impairment in girls. Registration begins at 8:45 a.m. at Wrightsville Beach Park. The Stroll-a-thon begins at 9:45 a.m. On Saturday there is another benefit. This one raises money for the Alzheimer’s Foundation. If you loved the Victorian era, you will enjoy this Moulin Rouge themed party. It begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Thalian Hall ballroom. Tickets are $55 in advance or $65 at the door.
