What's Happening July 16-18


WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- This weekend you can go surfing, fishing, or just sit back and catch a flick under the stars.

Come out and see puppets come alive on stage and on screen at Puppet Fest at UNCW. There will be puppet shows going on all weekend at Kenan Auditorium, and many other activities will be going on as well. It's $12 for adults, $8 for children and free for UNCW students. Check out for a full list of activities.

This is your chance to learn all about blue crabs. At 8 a.m. Friday the North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher has lessons in crab biology. This exciting expedition is for ages seven and up. Prices start at $16, and pre-registration is required. Just call (910) 458-8257.

If you want to watch the pros take to the waves, head to Wrightsville Beach this weekend for the sixth annual Reef/Sweetwater Pro-Am Surf Fest. More than 100 professional surfers from around the world will show off their skills during the three-day event. It takes place near the Oceanic.

Get a bug's eye view as you explore the incredible world of insects. Saturday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. you can visit the Learning Center at the Cape Fear Museum. You'll be able to find out everything you've always wanted to know about bugs. It's free to get in with museum admission.

If you love fishing, this may just be the tournament for you. The Firecracker King Mackerel Tournament is the first tournament that will involve five piers. It will take place at the Kure Beach Pier, Carolina Beach Pier, Johnny Mercer's Pier at Wrightsville Beach, Ocean Crest Pier and Oak Island Pier starting Saturday. The entry fee for this two-day event is $30, but that does not include the pier pass.

Catch a flick on the big screen while sitting on the green. The Pleasure Island Outdoor Summer Movie Series continues. It's at the Carolina Beach Lake Park. Their next showing is Sunday at 8:45 p.m. The movie is "Fame." It's free.
