WHITEVILLE, NC (WWAY) -- The weather outside is frightful, and there are some mixed emotions about the winter weather. Folks in Columbus County spent Sunday playing in a winter wonderland. Many bundled up and braved the cold, all in the name of a good snowball fight.
"This is a beautiful day," Whiteville resident Douglas Rooks said. "A good day. We like the snow."
Rooks and his family say they have really enjoyed the snow and they hope it keeps coming. Stefan Prevatte agrees. He spent the day sledding down the hill of the bypass of US 74/76 in Whiteville with some of his closest friends. He said it's their tradition on snowy days.
"We usually do this like once a year, cause we all come out here," Prevatte said. "We get everybody, a group of like 20 or 30 or so, and we just come out here and have fun. Usually, it is just us. I guess the rest of Whiteville doesn't know about it."
The group put their beach gear to work, trading waves for snow ramps. Derek Otstot said a boogie board is perfect for sledding.
"It's slick, it slides and you just gotta figure it out," Otstot said. "You just gotta do what you gotta do."
Not everyone had a fun experience with the winter weather. Angela Batterson said she loves the snow but she could do without the chilly temperatures.
"I'm not a fan of the cold, because I am also from Florida," Batterson said. "But I've seen snow before, because my dad is from Connecticut. It's pretty. I just don't like the cold as much."
Some residents were feeling the cold more than others. Power lines were covered with snow and ice, leaving many without power.
As for those spending the day outside, they say they'll worry about power later.
"I assume I have power," Otstot said. "I haven't been home in hours."
